What is available if I get laid off?

...I presume nothing, but I have to ask.

There is a good chance that the company I work for is going to go out of business. I'm a conditional green card holder who went through the K1 route, so we had to sign an affidavit of support. In the event of me losing my job, we will lose our house if I don't get another job within a couple of months. My wife can't work all that much and certainly can't earn enough to pay for the house.

In the worst case scenario, is there any assistance we might be able to get? I guess social security/unemployment is out because of my status?

Any advice will be greatly appreciated.

if this does happen you can file for unemployment and any other assistance ,,doesnt mean you will get it ,,just cuz you came here on k1 doesnt mean you wont get help it just means that they will use the paperwork that you filed showing youre ability to support the fiance against you in approveing youre request or in determining how much u get

If you end up unemployed through no fault of your own you are eligible to file a claim for unemployment insurance. This is a program into which you have already paid via deductions from your paycheque. It is not a means tested benefit that would be unavailable to you due to immigrant status. Getting UI will be determined based on your contributions level and the length of time you contributed. It has nothing to do with immigration.

My husband has his conditional green card. He was laid off from his job in October and he gets unemployment . I dont know if it is different from state to state.
