I'm sure Obama has a nice family and all - but I really don't care to hear about that.

What about the personal foibles of the Royal Family?

I don't follow that either to be honest.

But its irrelevant really. The Royal Family serve their purpose (such as it is). Its not like they have any actual power.

People elected Obama to fix the country, not to listen to anecdotes about his family.

Agreed

Perhaps its a cultural difference. We've had a tradition of sentimentalism with the First Family for a very long time.

I dunno - I find this stuff rather sleazy to be honest.

Really? You don't to hear anything about the First Family on a personal level?

Its not something I put a great deal of importance in.

It's funny, guys like Fancy Pants act like they would rather like a 'Royal' family - all that sensationalism and realism about their lives. I don't give a rats fart about the private life of someone like that, not the minutia of how they run their family as it has nil to do with his ability - or lack of - to run a government. It's twee and it's sentimental and I certainly don't need to spend my day wondering about that stuff.

And no Mr Pants, I don't read 'romance' novels. I do read novels that include romance though.

Did his kids ever get that puppy? Now that is really important news.

Ha, my son was telling me this morning about his experiences trying to get a rescue cat, easier to adopt a kid from North Korea. Opened Buyer's Guide a got a cute little kitty for free, family was glad to get rid of them. Rescue wanted him to fill out of ton of forms with all kinds of personal information, come out and investigate his home, and contribute 160 bucks just to get an alley cat that nobody wanted.

LOL....good grief, PH - you getting a bit trigger happy with your assumptions. I thought it was a touching story, in the context of Obama about to be sworn in as the first black President. As an American, I can imagine what Abe Lincoln would be thinking. That's it. Carry on with your cynicism.

Oh, are we trading assumptions? I hardly think having zero interest in Obama's private life counts as cynism. I will be very interested in the content of his speach, but just don't care about what he talks to his daughters about - and I would wonder at the wisdom of drawing attention to those two girls. Seems to me the best thing everyone can do is inquire little and allow them to grow up as normally as possible, which really isn't going to be that normal.

I think we probably agree more than disagree. However, there's no harm in a President showing a bit of his personal life - Americans are interested. We don't have the Royal Family to follow around, so we find fascination and curiosity in our presidents and their families.

I gotta say, that sounds right to me.

Here's the thing Mr Pants, I don't follow the Royal Family around - never have. I have zero interest in their goings on. If Queenie goes out and about on ceremonial business earning some nice tourist GDB, all well and good, but as to whether her children are behaving themselves, I couldn't give a ######. I would also venture to suggest that this voyeurism into the private lives of presidents and royal families explains a lot about the culture of idolism (is that the right word?) that seems to abound on both sides of the Atlantic, something I would have though you, as a practicing Christian would be more concerned about than me, the atheist but then what do I know?

Oh, and if you think I am taking a 'tone' with you, I am not. Just because I agree with you on some things doesn't mean I am going to agree with you on others.

I don't think there's anything abnormal about wanting to know more about a President's home life. My mom told me when Kennedy was President everyone held their breath to hear more about the kids in the White House. It makes you see more of a personal side to the leader of our country. Same with the fascination over the First Lady. I think my mom and her girlfriends ALWAYS used to try to dress like Jackie-O

I guess I swim against the tide, I have no time for idolism - I have no time for the minutiae of other people's lives.
