Hi,

Here is my situation, I am a divorced man. The last two year I have been going back and forth to Vietnam and met my current wife. She is currently pregnant with my first kid. Due to money reason, I have not doing the paperwork, getting marriage license and everything. Anyway, I'm planning to sponsor my wife and my child here to US but I don't know what kind of papers i need to bring with me to Vietnam for marriage. I have the divorce decree from the judge, but someone told my i need to get a Certified Divorce Decree in order to get a marriage license in Vietnam. Please let me know if you can help. Thanks in advance for your help.

If she is your wife, then why do you need to get married?

If your "child" is biological, then there is no need to sponsor, as you will first file for a Consular Report of Birth Abroad and when approved, the child will be a US Citizen and issued a US Passport

Sorry for the mistake, she is not my wife yet, on paper of course.

Just surf the web and punch in magic words: Marriage in Vietnam. Should get you started there and guide you in right direction.

Good Luck!!

Thank you for your help, my question is for those who have done this before. What documents/paper do i need to bring with me to Vietnam and how much does it cost to get a marriage license. Thank you.

You need to post this in the Regional forum for a better answer.

You could always go with a K-1 and not worry about the legalities until she gets here, but maybe that's not a good choice for you, I don't know.

In any case, you WILL need a certified copy of your divorce decree. You can't just turn in some ordinary photocopy of it. The court should have issued you one certified copy of your decree when it issued. But you don't want to give that up. That's for you, in case you ever need it. You need to go down to the courthouse where your decree was issued and request a certified copy. In fact, I'd request several certified copies while you're there. It will cost you some money. In Iowa, it's a pretty nominal fee. I don't know what the fee is in your state.

Make darn sure you've got some sort of official looking stamp on your copy(ies) before you leave, and make sure that they've not messed up and given you a certified copy of your QDRO or something (yes, this happened to me, and I had to drive all the way back).

Do post this in the SE Asia forum, though. I think you'll get a more satisfactory answer to your marriage question.

Good luck.

I just got married in May 2008 in Vietnam. Go to this link:

http://www.vietnamembassy-usa.org/consular...y_a_vietnamese/

and follow the instructions provided very simple!!

If you need any help, PM me and I'd be more than glad to help regarding your marriage.

As for your child, you should be able to file out a form to request birth of a child to a US Citizen outside of the US (Consular Report of Birth Abroad ).
