I am currently working with a company in the US and need my H1b visa stamped in the passport. I will be attending the interview next month in the consulate in Chennai with the relevant paperwork. A couple of days ago, I filled out a form DS-156 while preparing the documents without an actual interview date. Now, while attempting to make an appointment for the interview via VFS, I am being prompted to fill out another form DS-156. What is the best course of action for me at this time? Do I fill this form out and allow for duplication or is there a better way to proceed? Please advice.

Yes, if the DS-156 you previously filled out is still in your possession then there really is no duplication yet

YMMV
