We will be filing our I-751 in about 2 months. We have not talked to any attorneys up this point in our journey and see no reason to start now. That is us, everyone is different. If you read the guides and take your time, double and triple check everything, you should be ok. Just take your time, it is too important to rush through. Just my humble opinion.

No longer in the hands of the USCIS, for my wife at least, next up MIL.

You will still have to gather all of the documents yourself. All the lawyer will really do is fill out a very easy form, put the documents you find and copy in order, add a big binder clip and mail it -all for a big fee and taking longer than it would take to do it all yourself. Take a look at the I-751 form, read over the instructions, fill out a 'test' form on your own to see what it feels like (if you find it easy or difficult) and then decide if you really want to spend that much money in addition to the form. The majority of us here did not use a lawyer to file the I-751, me included (although I'm still waiting for approval :-) ). My recommendation? I think you can probably do this one on your own without too much difficulty.

I followed the guide here on VJ and blew right through the process. Unless you have something unusual you can do it yourself. Good luck

Hello All,

Thank you for the replies and gudiance. I am going to do it w/out a lawyer. As suggested, I will take the time to gather enough evidence which we have and present it in a way, that will hopefully make the job of the USCIS officer adjudicating our case easy.

Depends on how complicated your case is. If you file I-751 waiver based on a good faith marriage you'd better get a lawyer cause you may need good representation if they send you a notice to appear for an interview, get him/her with you. That's your residency something important so spend 1k-2k and don't let them play with you. www.superlawyers.com

We are not using a lawyer either. It's a waste of money if your marriage is in good faith and you know how to fill in a simple form. We haven't used a lawyer for K-1, AOS, and no reason to do it now either. Good Luck!

Hello Folks,

Do you think it is necessary to hire an immigration lawyer to file my I751? The lawyer is asking for $750 to file my papers. What do you think? How many of you used the services of an immigration lawyer?

Thanks!

use a lawyer for a waiver case not for a joint application
