Does it have to be the visa recipient who signs for visa from courier?

Just realised not only do I still have to work tomorrow, but it's quite a work load and I may be gone for four hours maybe three. Would be suprised if I get through it in two. I got SMS txt today that it's coming tomorrow but it got through to my phone after 5pm even though it was sent at 3:30pm and this too late to arrange and pay for a specific time. I can't get out of work. But I may be able to get other people to man the door when I'm not there possibly.

But does it have to be me who has to sign for it?

As long as there is someone at home to sign that is OK. My wife signed for mine.

Can someone else receive or sign for my delivery for me?

You can choose any responsible person to receive or sign for a delivery on your behalf. This person must produce evidence of YOUR identity for example your passport, driving licence, bank card or in some cases a utility bill if requested.

I was in UK and at Nick's to receive his visa. He left a credit card with his name on it and a bill (his name and that address). When the guy came, he didn't even ask for anything...just gave me the envelope and handed me the thing to sign. You'll be fine leaving some id for them.

I had it sent to my university, and I was away in Bath when it arrived. The university post room called (make sure you give the embassy your cellphone number) and said, "i don't have your ID." But the courier trusted him to check my ID and when we got back to London we picked it up with my ID! Worked fine, but I would definitely leave your ID and/or put the person's name on the package who will be there to pick it up.

In Kiev, my wife (then fiancee) listed her mother as an authorized receiver of the package. Not sure what FedEx will require in UK, maybe someone else can sign without prior notice.

Me, being me, I would say "Take this job and SHOVE it!!!!!!!" and stay home for the visa.

I made my now hubby call in sick so he could stay home and wait for it. His luck it came before he even had to be at work so he had a whole day to just sleep! We didn't even pay for early delivery and it came around 7am.
