By air, US citizens need a passport going to Canada and returning to the US. If he was crossing by land or sea he would only need proof of identity and citizenship. That will end this summer, though, because that is when passports-only are implemented.

Here is a really good site: Peace Bridge Customs & Immigration

AIR TRAVEL

* All persons traveling by air outside of the United States are required to present a passport or other valid travel document to enter or re-enter the United States.

http://travel.state.gov/travel/cbpmc/cbpmc_2223.html

at first I read that statement wrong but on second glance t looks like you don't need a passport to enter Canada by air... it just says entering or re-intering the US... :unsure:

not that it makes a big difference because you would still need the passport to get back into the US...

Funny, they say this at Canada Border Services:

Non-Canadians

Requirements to Enter Canada

When you enter Canada, a CBSA officer may ask to see your passport and a valid visa, if one is necessary. If you are a citizen of the United States, you do not need a passport to enter Canada. However, you should carry proof of your citizenship, such as a birth certificate, certificate of citizenship or naturalization, as well as photo identification. If you are a permanent resident of the U.S, you should bring your Permanent Resident Card (i.e., green card) with you.

and they say this on the Government of Canada website:

If you plan to visit Canada , you must:

Have a valid travel document, such as a passport;

Be in good health;

Have enough money for your stay. The amount of money you will need can vary with the circumstances of the visit, how long you will stay and whether you will stay in a hotel or with friends or relatives. For more information, ask the Canadian visa office in your country or region.

Convince an immigration officer that you have ties, such as a job, home and family, that will take you back to your country of origin; and

Convince an immigration officer that you will leave Canada at the end of your visit.

Yes, they will need a passport.

All persons including citizens of the United States traveling by air between the U.S., Canada, Mexico, the Caribbean and Bermuda are required to present a passport

But, like you say, it really is a moot point seeing how you need it to get back into the US. LOL

well, my plans were complicated. I was planning on flying to Toronto, renting a car and driving to NYC, fly back to LA. One of the people I was going with does not have an up-to-date passport

So, as I understood it, possibly not need a passport now. Since these plans are for summer....someone needs to get their butt in gear and renew their passport!

Thanks guys!

If the person renews their passport now, they should have it by summer with no problem. However, it is possible to pay extra to have it expedited so you can renew your passport in less than two weeks.
