Hi,

So here's an unusual dilema. My co-sponsor does not want her social security number or her bank account number to be seen on the paperwork that she will provide for sponsorship. Will this be acceptable?

Thank you,

Eva

Hi,

No, I doubt it. My guess is your co-sponsor is not so thrilled about being a co-sponsor, which carries much more risk than that of giving out her bank account number which she would probably do to pay her electric bill, and the electric company and all its employees already have her SSN.

Your co-sponsor and you need to realize that this is a serious matter. Not only will she co-sponsor the K-1 visa, which is really nothing, but you will (I presume) need a co-sponsor for the adjustment of status when your fiancee arrives. This means your co-sponsor will sign a contract with the government for 10 YEARS to support your fiancee. So...if you get divorced 8 YEARS down the road and your (now permanent resident) ex-wife has no income, guess who they will come back to when she needs welfare or food stamps? Her social security number and bank account number should be (and probably are) the least of her worries.

I also have to caution people that need a co-sponsor of this... The requirement of 125% of poverty level is really quite low and if you cannot meet that standard (it is really VERY low) then you need to consider carefully the choices you are making and if that is a good choice for someone you really care about. There are some exceptions to this, self-employed people often have low "gross incomes" because so much of their income is deductible, a law student or med student or other future professional may need only a few months to finish school and enter a really good job...of course there are good reasons for a co-sponsor, just as there are good reasons to use a credit card sometimes. But really consider this carefully.

I think many people (including myself) vastly underestimate the costs of bringing a wife or family from overseas. I make like 400% more than needed for a family of four, but I have been having difficulty with all the things that need to be done. You think you will save money when your fiancee arrives? I did. After all, I went to Ukraine 5 times in 10 months. Ahhhhhhh...but now my wife wants to go one time per year...but now we buy FOUR plane tickets! We have to squirrel away money every week for this one planned trip. I was sending $800 per month to Ukraine...surely I would save that? Right? Wrong. We still send money to Momma and one son at college and the food bill here doubled and the electric bill tripled (I am wondering when the DEA will show up do see if I am growing pot in the basement!) My wife is taking three English classes, started driving lessons less than 48 hours after arriving and before we received our AOS she received a drivers license and needed her own car to go to class, not to mention all the expense to "feminize" a bachelor home. PLUS the AOS costs. And we still call friends and family in Ukraine and the phone bills have been barely gone down, PLUS add a cell phone for her and one for the boys and YIKES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

You will not begin to finance a wife and/or family for 125% of poverty level. Just something to consider.

VERMONT! I Reject Your Reality...and Substitute My Own!
