Hi all

Can you help?

Unless there is a legal reason why you don't have one, yes. A legal reason would be you are not a US Citizen or otherwise do not qualify for an SSN. A K1 visa holder can obtain an SSN fairly quickly if they do it soon enough after entry but I doubt most County Clerk staff actually know the rules on that. I expect if you show a foreign passport, that would be good enough.

You were married in Michigan and are sure of this?

The reason I'm asking is I know it varies state to state.

I wouldn't bother answering if I wasn't sure but no, I wasn't married in Michigan. I just researched the regulations at the Kent County Clerk's website. Check your own county. It's really easy.

Apparently you did bother, and you aren't sure. I have researched it, the reason I was asking here was to get some real experiences of those actually married in Michigan.

No need to be rude, and before you say it that was not straight talk!!

In Michigan http://www.farmworkerlaw.org/Members/di/Fa...02008-04-02.pdf

"A county clerk may issue a marriage license to an

applicant who fails to provide his or her social

security number on the application if the person has

never been issued a social security number and so

states on the affidavit for license to marry or in a

separate sworn statement made a part of the

application.”

A county clerk should not

question the reasons for not having a SSN, and an

applicant should not have to provide a reason.

When only one person in a couple does not have a social

security number, the person who has a SSN should

submit the application to the county clerk’s office, since

only one person needs to submit the application in

person. This may help to avoid unnecessary questions or

inappropriate investigation by the county clerk.

I bothered to do the research and to be sure. You can do the same.

Since 2007 the law changed in Michigan, requiring those who actually have an SSN to provide it. Those who have never had one, my so state in writing and obtain a marriage license without an SSN. This information is available at any County Clerk's office or website.

Hello DairyFarmer,

Congratulations on your immigration success and upcoming wedding!

I have some experience with Michigan. I was living about 15 miles south of Detroit when my 'now-wife' came to the US on a K-1 Visa. I did the research on the internet, and also called to discuss the requirements for getting married in Michigan. On the phone, they did indeed tell me that my wife would need a social security number before she could be married in Michigan.

So, considering our location, I called down to Toledo, Oh. In Ohio, they do not require the social security numbers. The lady on the phone in Ohio told me, "we get a lot of people coming down from Michigan to get married here in Toledo, Ohio, simply because we don't have any requirements."

In Toledo, I just went in and filled out the wedding application and we both showed our passports. That was all they required (you might want to call them to make sure it is still the same...we we married in May 2007).

It was very simple, we filled out the application for the marriage license and were married all in about one hour.

Considering that you're not far from Toledo, I bet you could follow the same process that my wife and I followed.

I wish you the best, and again...CONGRATS!

Peace,

MarkNAam
