We switched over from Cable (Cox) to Dish Network and so far have been really happy. We were paying about $75 to have a DVR plus basic cable. With Dish Network, we're paying $50 a month including HBO and Starz...and one DVR records off of both TV's.

My main request in TV.. of course local tv.. but a must have is travel network food network Familychannel (Ithink it is ABC Family) ya know the normal simple shows that a 16 yr old girl likes to watch... for myself. as long as I have my CSI and LOST and Jeopardy.. Im good to go..hhahah..

Personally your cable shows are blocked by me on my TV but everyone has different tastes.

Wouldn't it be cheaper to stick an antenna up and pay nothing a month? You can't get channels in Portland? The only reason I've had cable for the first time in my life is because I pay for it with my apartment rent anyway. Not anti-TV just cheap and grew up with free TV.

We get Comcast cable through our apartment but in the past we have had DirecTV and LOVED it. If we have a choice in the future we will probably go back. We use Comcast for internet. No problems so far and I like that we aren't bound by a contract. We only have two choices here for net...comcast and verizon and I already had it out with verizon so we went to Comcast. I wish there were more choices. Good luck in whatever you decide.

We have dish network. We had the big local cable provider BrightHouse Networks, but we wanted to save money and they didn't give many pricing options to fit our needs. We switched to Dish b/c of more pricing options, we went for the "America's Top 100" I think, saving around $15/mo(not sure of the exact amt actually). Lost some channels, gained some channels, but we don't care that much. We don't do DVR and extras b/c we don't want to spend the money on it. I've been fine with the Dish so far.

Unfortunately I live in a condo where the association pays for our basic comcast......

I wanted HD, DVR and some latin channels from South America and I'm charged and extra $55.00 a month from the Rip Off folks at comcast.

I had Direct TV before and loved it... Should look into how much it would cost with what I need

Comcast customer service also SUCKS big time

I have Comcast for Net.. but.. am thinking of going with CLEAR WiMAXX that is starting up here in Portland... I talked to the rep for Clear.. seems in Feb late they will be havig a router that you can use with their usb mobile connection .. after that i can use that at home and disconnect the Comcast for a more portable net connection. That will be $50 for unlimited usage.. nice..

Would be interested to hear how you get on with Clear if you do go that way. As I have a network at home I didn't think it would work but your mention of a router changes that.

That will be $50 for unlimited usage.. nice..

So if I choose DirectTV package for $40ish.. and use Clear for net.. $50 that is still less than what I will be paying for Comcast alone..

So once they connect the home network router for Clear.. i will be able to disconnect the Comcast. .. thus.. my total savings.. lets see.

currently I pay comcast tv +internet $145. + dialup Peoplepc at office. grr .. $15.

Once I switch.. DirectTV $45 Clear $50. whoo hoo.. ..

just will have to see. .. im gonna check out Clear .as a option first before I disconnect my comcast internet..

I had the saaaaaame issue with Comcast because when your $99 price promotion for all 3 services is over, it goes up to like $170 a month. So get this, when I called to cancel my cable and only keep my phone and internet, they gave a sweet deal on the remaining services for up to a year, so you save even more.

I'll send you a PM regarding DIRECTV.

We have had DirecTV for a while, but did find something out: Everytime I get an offer from DISH, or Comcast that seems like a better deal, I call DirecTV and ask them for a better deal. Most times, the first person you talk to explains why the current service you have is better, and that they can not change the prices, etc. Then they will other you free Showtime, or a free DVR, or something else.

But don't stop there! Ask if there is someone else you can talk to. They transferred me to marketting (marketing?), and they not going to let me hang up until we came to a deal. I got $10.00 off my package for twelve months. He said, when that expires, call back and we will make another deal next time.

we are lame...lol.. we got rid of cable about a year ago... I was tired of paying the 45 dollars a month and we didn't even watch half the channels.. now we still get all the basic channels which is ok for me and most of the big shows you can watch online now anyways...

we are still paying 45 dollars a month for our internet.. won't be giving that up anytime soon ..:P

Sooo tired of paying out the ear for simple tv with HBO.. my Cable bill is like $100 a month.. with another 50 going towards my cable internet..

SOMETHING HAS TO CHANGE... soooo

I started researching..

DirectTV.. offers a plan Choiceplus DVR.. for like $39 a month.. adding another room for $5 more.. or go without the DVR and its just $5 less a month.. if you do the DVR you get a free DVR.. hmmm. thinking. might be good deal..

Over all I think DirectTV has good options.. and actually has a better option for International programs.. adding on $15 a month I can get some good India programs.. NDTV..

DishNetwork.. didnt get too much information from them.. actually got pissed talking to the representitive.. kept asking redundant questions.. I actually hung up.. and he called back.. grrr.. ohh sorry he said our call was disconnected.. .. I told him no not disconnected I hung up...... grrrr. I listened to him tried to ask my questions.. still didnt get them answered.. .. then when he wanted to schedule. I told him i still wasnt ready to make my decision.. he kept pestering me telling me .. I needed to say it now .. not tomorrow or i wont get the special.. phooey on any special... firstly he doesnt listen to what I was asking. then he had the balls to try and pressure me into a sale or such.. wanting me to tell him why i wont sign up now... which i said is not his business.. but I need to make a decision with MY FAMILY.. after discussion we will decide together who or what we will choose.. . not now when i am being pressured .. I told him that because of his pressuring.. I might not choose to do business with him .. but I will need to think..

Pricing seems to be similar with Direct and Dish.. not sure of what exactly is different.. cause I couldnt get a straight answer from the Dish man.

Comcast. grrr.. .. no need to say my feelings except I feel like it is a monopoly to rip us all off..

what experiences have you had with your TV services??/

Just a side note... I dont have a HDTV.. no plasma. or lcd.. or such.. just simply a old normal regular tv... .. no intentions on upgrading .. simply wish to watch the good ole way I always have.. dont want to re-invent..

so.. seems some of the programs out there are too foofy.. with HDTV and such.. .. which is what comcast is trying to make everyone pay for without the ability to watch..

tell me tell me.. I wish to hear your experiences.. .. thanks

look Up FTA Free To Air Viewsat satellite receivers. I have not paid for cable in 3 years.

I haven't read this entire thread, so if this has been posted please accept my apology.

We have a 2 year contract with Dish. Since then our box (HD) has gone out twice, and needed to be replaced. Both times they attempted to charge me. My view on it is that the box is theirs, and I am merely renting it. It isn't my responsiblity to pay for repairs, nor should I pay for the repair man to come out to fix their fautly equipment. If I had done something wrong I could understand it, but they even admitted that they have had this same problem many times before.

Every time they try to charge me I tell them what I stated above, and all of a sudden they are going to put me on a special list, and I won't have to pay this time. Amazing isn't it, that I, a nobody to them, could be on a "special list". I suspect that they try to charge people, and if they argue they back off. I wonder how many automatically pay?
