For respect, I respect the big fat guy who knows he's a big fat guy, accepts that he's a big fat guy, and doesn't care that he's a big fat guy. I also have respect for the big fat guy (or girl like you encountered) who tries to change it.

What I don't respect is a big fat person who blames genetics, family history, or society for their condition, all the while loafing around on the couch eating junk food.

I guess I can still have sympathy for people even if they are the agents of their own downfall. But even if you can't, I see a difference between lack of sympathy and contempt.

You're a better person than me because of it.

Furthermore, don't you have sympathy for people who have less willpower than you? I recently loss some weight and I'm very proud of myself, but I also feel sympathy for those who just can't get it together and get it done.

Good job on losing the weight. I'm sure you must have altered the way you eat as well as your physical activity levels to do so.

I get sick of people blaming their self-inflicted problems on everything but their lack of willpower, especially when it incurs a cost that I'm expected to help pay for.

I drink more than perhaps I should. So did my grandfather, and I heard my great-grandfather was a bit of a drunk. Also, my father committed suicide when I was 16.

But I drink too much because I choose to go to the liquor store and buy some beer, then I go home and drink it. It isn't because of my grandfather, my great-grandfather, or my father's suicide.

Despite the fact that I'm a bit of a booze hound, I cut myself off before I let it affect my family, my work, or the size of my gut. If I couldn't do that, I hope I wouldn't try to blame someone else or expect special treatment.

since when doesnt booze increase ur probility of health problems? who's going to be paying ur bills and taking care of u when u get liver cancer, heart attacts...etc? really u should be worried about it more then someone being obease.

What is the woman in the OP complaining about? She got her MRI in the end, and it wasn't at the zoo...But if it had to be at the zoo-so what...? as long as she gets the thing done. I would have thought treatment for her tumour would be far more important than whatever her rather large panties are in a wad about.

It seems most of you are missing Wally's point. He's not saying that drinking alcohol is better than eating or that being overweight is bad in of itself.

He's saying that if you're overweight and you're fine with it, then that's okay. If you're overweight and wish to do something about it (i.e. diet, exercise, etc), than that's just as cool.

His main issue is when someone is overweight and does nothing more than complain about their situation (often blaming it on external factors).
