5 foot....275

three times my weight for the same height... crazy

yes they should have MRI machines that fit everybody but maybe everybody should make an effort to maintain a somewhat normal weight...

Have you ever had one of these people sit in the seat of an airplane on a 10 hour flight and complain the whole way about the small seats, as their fat drapes over on you. Pathetic.

Aren't self induced disabilities wonderful?

And as for contempt, why should I have to pay extra on an airplane because my suitcase is too heavy, and also pay extra so the airline can absorb the cost of having to give some fat guy an extra seat for free?

Why should a fat person get a handicapped sticker for his car, and take up a parking space that some vet who got his leg blown off in 'Nam could have used?

They tax cigarettes to help pay for medical expenses incurred by smokers on the public dole. Why isn't there a donut tax? Why should I have to pay for some guy to have quadruple bypass surgery that he needs because he sat around on the couch eating Twinkies for 30 years? That's not my fault.

My groceries would cost less if the supermarket didn't pass the cost of the fleet of $2500 scooters they keep around for fat people on to me.

And save it moderators, these are my opinions and this is the "off topic" forum. I'm not singling any posters out, and I'm not voicing these opinions on the "CR1 visa" threads.

You're allowed your opinions. Am I not allowed to question them because I am a moderator?

Anyway, it sounds to me like you're projecting your issues with government policy regarding obese people onto the obese people themselves.

I guess large people, so as not to offend the general public, should shut themselves away and only come out when they can't be viewed.

I would love to ask everyone that is so offended by a large person to give this a try. As I stated, I can only eat about 800 to 1000 calories a day to maintain a healthy weight. I challenge any of you to eat that much each day for a week. If you can (honestly) tell me that you could do that for the rest of your life without fail and without complaint, I will certainly take my hat off to you. Takers anyone?

Why are we supposed to do this? Your body needs 1,200 calories a day just to perform basic functions.

Sorry, I didn't even realize that you're a moderator. I'm referring to the time when I made similar comments and a different moderator told be I'd be booted off the site if I said anything critical of fat people again.

Out of curiosity, how much sympathy do you have for someone who smokes for years and gets sick from it? For someone who gets a 'SLAYER' tattoo across their forehead then can't find a job? For someone who gets caught drunk driving and has to walk to work?

These comparisons may be somewhat obscure, but I don't think they're fallacious.

No problemo. Though I'm sure it didn't go down quite like that. :P

I guess I can still have sympathy for people even if they are the agents of their own downfall. But even if you can't, I see a difference between lack of sympathy and contempt.

Furthermore, don't you have sympathy for people who have less willpower than you? I recently loss some weight and I'm very proud of myself, but I also feel sympathy for those who just can't get it together and get it done.

I may need that much to function, but that much will gradually make me fat. So I would love to see if you guys can handle it without whining. I highly doubt anyone will take me up on it however. To me I just hear b!tching, but I highly doubt anyone that is doing that would be willing to step up to the plate.

I won't go less than 1,200 calories a day. That's very unhealthy. I exercise way too much to do something so silly.

In general, 1200 calories is the minimum anyone should lower their daily caloric intake. If you lower it further, you run the risk of having your body "think" it's starving, in which case it'll reduce your overall metabolism to compensate. A lower metabolism means less potential weight loss. If that occurs, then most people will feel depressed at not losing weight fast enough and eventually figure "it's not worth it if I don't get results" and return to their old eating habits.

Even if weight loss does occur, those on "starvation diets" will usually gain back everything they've lost and more. The reason for that is your body will "feed" on anything within you. If you choose a "starvation diet," your muscle mass will slowly decrease over time. Muscle helps to burn calories while you're sitting around. So if muscle mass is lessened and you regain your old weight, losing it a second time will be more difficult since the number of calories you'll burn off will be less.

Good job on losing the weight. I'm sure you must have altered the way you eat as well as your physical activity levels to do so.

I get sick of people blaming their self-inflicted problems on everything but their lack of willpower, especially when it incurs a cost that I'm expected to help pay for.

I drink more than perhaps I should. So did my grandfather, and I heard my great-grandfather was a bit of a drunk. Also, my father committed suicide when I was 16.

But I drink too much because I choose to go to the liquor store and buy some beer, then I go home and drink it. It isn't because of my grandfather, my great-grandfather, or my father's suicide.

Despite the fact that I'm a bit of a booze hound, I cut myself off before I let it affect my family, my work, or the size of my gut. If I couldn't do that, I hope I wouldn't try to blame someone else or expect special treatment.

Yes, in general, that's true. But there are outliers. I think that's all morocco4ever is saying.

I eat a lot, but I'm not a lardass. Here's my system:

For meat or fish, I eat what I gauge to be 1 reasonable serving of protein. For carbs, I do the same.

Then I pig out on veggies until I'm satisfied.

I also exercise.

I suspect many fat people would benefit from a similar regimen.

I don't see where it got off to blaming someone else for getting fat. And as far as special treatment, well how about respect? You drink to much, so we should not respect you?

I remember as a teen age girl, sitting in a car with a bunch of guys and girls out having fun. We drove by a large girl, probably in her 20's, jogging. The kids in the car yelled insults at her. I could see the hurt on her face. What is her incentive to keep trying? She was trying to do something about it and that is her reward? True, they were just kids. But I see it with full grown adults. I can see that many don't understand how it happens, but to be outright cruel and rude is disgusting in my opinion.

This is why many overweight people don't go to the gym, especially women (at the risk of sounding sexist, women tend to get more sensitive about things like that, they tend to notice 'the looks' more too).

That must account for the high sales of Wii Fit.

I just get annoyed that you can't use racial slurs on VJ, but the fat are an open target.

VJ values reflect society's values in general. Society looks down on the poor, the fat, the stupid, the deformed, etc. So does VJ. Can't blame VJ for that.

I agree if you are talking about every member on the whole VJ site...but when it comes down to off topic and the members that post the most, not sure I agree. Some voices are just louder IMO in certain issues. For instance, looking at the recent God threads...more people in those seem to be atheists than what would represent actual society %'s, where there is a much higher percentage of those who actually believe in some form of God compared to those who happen to post on those certain subjects here at times. I don't actually think VJ as a whole looks down on those kind of people, we don't know what every VJer thinks on those. Yeah you are going to have every kind of person on VJ, and a mix of views...but not sure I think it represents society in all ways.

I'm not being "cruel and rude", am I? Is voicing a legitimate opinion that may not be what someone wants to hear cruel and rude? I wasn't in that car that day hollering out the window.

As I said, I drink more than perhaps I should, but I don't beat or yell and swear at my wife, drive around in my car blind-drunk, or miss work. Think of me what you will.

For respect, I respect the big fat guy who knows he's a big fat guy, accepts that he's a big fat guy, and doesn't care that he's a big fat guy. I also have respect for the big fat guy (or girl like you encountered) who tries to change it.

What I don't respect is a big fat person who blames genetics, family history, or society for their condition, all the while loafing around on the couch eating junk food.
