Hi All,

Should an applicant who came to the US on a K-1 visa and does not yet have work authorization mark "legal alien allowed to work" or "legal alien not allowed to work" in the citizenship section on the Social Security card application form?

Thanks,

Jillian

allowed to work

But until you are reclassed to LPR you will need authorization by the USCIS thus the EAD card.

but could get work permit if they applied for it (category A6 on I-765 application)... because of that, the answer is "allowed to work".

YMMV

Correct...the answer is "allowed to work" is what needs to be checked on the application for SS. K-1 Visa has the authorization to work, but "you" do not have a permit to work, but that does not mean you're not "allowed to work".

We said allowed to work. I used the example here on VJ and have seen lots of references to use allowed to work.

I second this. "Allowed to work" should be checked!

When we went to apply for my husband's social security number, we asked which box to check and the woman at the counter told us to leave it blank. I'm not sure if it stayed blank or the person who actually processed the application filled in the correct blank. I have seen people on here who have said they've checked allowed to work and others who have said not allowed. There may be a right answer to this, but I don't think it really matters what you check---you will get a social security card that says you can work with DHS authorization only.
