Hi everybody! I am new to this forum and I am looking for info about the translation of certificates for an immigrant visa. I have to send my husband (US) the police records, which are written in Italian, for the pre-interview items to be sent to NVC. I guess they have to be translated, but what kind of translation do I need? The legalised one with the Apostille?

I understand, then, that the items I will have to bring to the embassy for the interview should not be translated if they are in Italian or in English, is that correct?

I assume there are other posts dealing with this topic, but i am so anxious i would probably make a lot of confusion among the different information I would find...THANKS TO EVERYONE!

If the police certificates are italian and the embassy from where you're applying the visa is in italy then nothing needs to be translated. Only documents with languages other than english/italian need to be translated. I know it because i sent all my paperwork to my mother so she could send it to NVC and they said that i didn't have to translate them from portuguese to english since i'm applying at the embassy in Rio de Janeiro-Brazil.

Timeline:

filed I-130: 2007/10/10 (child under 21 unmarried of a USC) "IR2"

uscis sends NOA: 2007/10/22

21st b-day: 2008/**/** (well that sucks)

I-130 approval notice: 2008/06/15 (was approved due to CHILD STATUS PROTECTION ACT, signed by Pres. Bush on August 6,2002)

case forwarded to NVC: 2008/06/16

biometrics bill received: 2008/07/13

biometrics bill paid: 2008/07/15

IV bill received: 2008/07/27

affidavit of support request received: 2008/08/02

affidavit of support request sent: 2008/09/20

IV bill paid: 2008/09/20

DS-230 request received: 2008/10/01

DS-230 request sent via express mail: 2008/11/20 (had to wait a loooong time for police certificates)

Medical Exam: 2008/11/25 (passed no problems of course!)

NVC receives DS-230 package: 2008/11/29

CASE COMPLETE!! : 2008/12/09 (no RFE)

case forwarded to embassy in Rio de Janeiro-Brazil: 2009/01/08

interview date and time: 2009/02/02 at 7:45am

Yes, the embassy/consulate is in Italy and I know they obviously don't need the translation, I did not know if the NVC, that is in US instead, required the translation or not, but you have been very clear!! Thank you!!!

Also call NVC or US Consulate to check to make sure

If I were you, I would have it translated to English then send both copies: Italian + English

There won't be no harm if sending extra document. Beside that you do not have to worry at all, and might avoid potential RFE. Good luck

You are right, translating a certificate takes maybe couple hours, while re-doing everything after an RFE requires WAY MORE than that! THANKS
