K1 Visa - Travel after marriage

Hi everyone.

Ravi and I have been waiting for months now for his K1 visa to be approved. We feel like it is getting close now so we want to start making plans for the future.

I read on one of the other posts that it will be ok to travel inside the US but will he be able to travel outside the US as well? My family is planning an Alaskan cruise at the end of the year but most of those leave from Canada. Will he be able to go?

Is there something special we will have to do or wait for in order for us to be able to travel somewhere besides India or the US?

unless he has his green card or approved ap (advanced parole) document, he cannot leave the usa. well he can leave but good luck getting back in....

After you get married you apply for AOS (adjustment of status). At that time you can also apply for AP (advanced parole) which allows him to leave the US until he receives his Green Card. AP usually takes about 90 days from submission of AOS.

Just so you know he is not allowed to return to the US, even after visiting India, without AP or Green Card.

I will be in a similar situation here soon and just curious about how soon he will be able to visit his family in Guatemala. Once the i-485 is approved but he has his temporary 2 year Green Card will he be able to travel on that with no problem?

Yes, that is correct. Specifically, he will be able to return to the US with the conditional greencard.

That's good to know. I would hate to think he wouldn't be able to see his family for 2-3 years. Especially since we would like to have kids fairly soon after marriage and I know that grandparents would be dying on the other side!

But just to confirm, before the conditional green card is in hand he would not be able to travel outside of the US unless with an AP, right? Is there ever a problem flying within the US during this time?

He is free to leave the U.S. anytime, but getting back in -- without the green card or AP -- would require starting all over from the beginning with another immigration application.

Not flying, but if you plan to fly to south Texas and then drive around, be aware of the inland Customs & Border Protection checkpoints where all vehicles are stopped and the occupants' citizenships are scrutinized. This area within approximately 50 miles of the Mexican border is called the "De-Constitutionalized Zone" for good reason, si man.
