No the OP hit a border patrol point.

They didnt actually cross into mexico, but instead visited one of the US towns near enough to the border to have to clarify their nationality to an officer.

Across Texas, there are checkpoints 0-60 miles inward from the U.S./Mexico border. For example, there are stops south of Falfurrias (about 50 miles north of McAllen, TX), 20 miles north of Laredo, TX, 30 miles east of Eagle Pass, TX, etc. Basically, you pull up to the agent(s) while in the vehicle, he/they ask, "U.S. Citizen?" With me being a white guy, it's usually as simple as saying, "yes." Most let you go right by, but I have a black SUV with tinted windows so they sometimes have me roll down the window so they can check inside. They also have drug dogs to sniff the vehicles. With my wife being Filipino, she has many physical characteristics similar to that of Mexican women (even people in the border towns address her and I in Spanish) so I guess it puts them a little more leary to be sure about her identity and legal status.
