My wife is actually afraid of the water and doesn't want to go on any cruises because she thinks the ship might sink.

I was really shocked at how many filipinos dont swim when i visited there. I was swimming all around out in the deep blue water, checkin out all the badass coral and fish. They have such an awesome world of wonder right out their backyards, but dont seem to take advantage! I think maybe not wanting to get real dark skinned keeps them from going into the water and sun for long periods, so they never spend enough time in it to learn.

Hopefully my love will learn quickly and learn to enjoy it as much as we do! And anyway, the dark skin is rather sexy to me!

I was just curious as to how many of you filipinas can swim? My filipina sweetheart is still in Cebu and she and most of her family/friends cant swim! Living in Texas it is a necessity to know how to swim as it gets so darn hot here! Also, i want to teach her to wakeboard when she gets here....so how many of you pinay's can swim? And to the ones that learned once they got here, was it easy for you to learn? Im just curious...thanx yall! :)

That gives you something to work on with her..hehehe... im from cebu, and livin in this lil island in some way gives me this feelin of like, takin the waters for granted- di bitaw na mo dagan.....adding up this 'color issue'.. a lot of filipinas are so scared of getting dark or darker..hehe.. lots of girls here are ate up with whitening products and wouldnt want to waste such effort to go to the beach and swim under the sun..hehe...eventually getting scared of the waters cuz of less exposure.. well at least this is based on my experience..hehehe... di ganahan mo lagom..

with your sweetheart hmmm sounds like you got alot of work to do.. ..hehe..

have heard Texas is also called the 'New Philippines'... is it because of the temp?.. how hot does it get there? (in Celsius please..hehe)

Yeah, i actually brought her a cute, little, pink wakeboard vest, so she could wear it while i tried to teach her to swim. It kept her from sinking, but doesnt quite keep her mouth from dipping below the surface. That way she has to learn to tread water to keep her head up and doesnt just rely on the flotation alone.

She did really well with me in the water with her. The main thing is to not panic and remain calm in the element. I was only there for 2 weeks, so it wasnt long enough to teach her everything! I was very proud of her though! As to the question about the heat in Texas, it stays up around 100 F for most of the summer, i dont know the C conversion....sorry! I compare the heat in Cebu to a typical summer day in Houston, TX. Anyway, all you filipinas should get out in the sun and water and enjoy it! Yall have such beautiful skin! Dont worry about getting dark! Its sexy!

to be honest i cant say "I CAN SWIM" w/ confidence  ... im scared on deep waters. although i have swimming lessons when i was a kid, then came college too and i even had a lesson here in the US lol. but still i have that fear in me. so i always wear a vest (coast guard approved most of the time, kind of vest) whenever i wakeboard/wakeskate/wakesurf on the lake... i can swim ok when i can stand on water but when its deeper, i get paranoid... when we were surfing in phil (siargao), i was the only one who's wearing a vest. not coast guard approved but it helped me float a little (its a bit embarrassing but better safe than sorry)... dont worry, if its just wakeboarding she really doesnt have to know how to swim on deep water coz she'll wear a vest (sports type of vest that fit her well)... good luck

God bless all!

Yeah, i was really happy when i saw yalls profile. It was nice to see a filipina actually wakeboarding! My girl is adventurous too and wants to learn also! When i was in Cebu i showed them a wakeboard/skate video called "push process". Everyone there was just in total amazement of the tricks....but hell, so am i! Just remember that the more time in the water, the more natural it will feel! Keep up the active lifestyle girl, looks like your having fun!

And remember to progressive edge into the wake! LOL.

it really depends on where your wife grew up because in some places in the philippines swimming was the past time of some children. Lately the trend here in the philippines the whiter complexion you have the more pretty they will be which i think is not really good. I believe tan is sexy and hot.

My complexion is fair and i don't have tan marks anymore but i wish i had hehehe! i am a good swimmer since i was young coz i was part of the varsity team of my high school and during college i was the swimming team captain of my college. I love to swim but i am scared of swimming in the ocean. actually scared of not because the water is deep but because i always think that something will bite off my foot like sharks or whatever.

there's a water complex in phil that serves wakeboarding etc and thats in camarines sur. been there 3 times coz my hubby loves the water sports... anyways im a beginner per se. i just learned how to cross toe side in and out of the wake consistently this summer. heel side edge is easier for me to do. maybe wakeboard 10 times total (min of 5-min-10 on the water. really tiring lol)... anyways, i thought a wake jump is really cool even though im not ready yet. but i tried anyways and it was awful. my husband and the rest of our friends in the boat was sacred to death coz i crashed the hardest and weirdest way... i got bruises on my ear, swelling, and an injured rib that even now it still gona hurt if i twist my body in a wrong way lol... thats why wakeskating sometimes is cool coz when you crash, its not as real bad compared to wakeboarding... though both of them are cool... so excited of your girl to try it... tough at first but she'll love it in the end!

My lady can't swim either but has done some jetskiing

I think the reason why most pinoys/pinays can't swim is that no one (i.e no class offered in school or by the local government) really teaches swimming at schools (not sure about that now) and people don't have access to public pools/school pools like here in the US. I used to live near Camp John Hay (when it was still being run by the US) in Baguio and had access to the swimming pool over there.

My wife can swim, she had swimming lessons as a child.

It also amazes me how many people in PI can't swim, you would think it would be second nature to them since there are so many islands.
