Engagement ring declaration question.

Hey I had a question that I'm not sure if you guys would know. I had asked in another discussion but its prolly better to split it off so ppl who might now can see it too. I know my hunny will have to declare the engagement ring when he lands in ottawa, from what I've seen sometimes they make you pay duty and sometimes they dont. The question I have is: Is the duty just the GST and if he does have to pay it, what forms of payment do they accept? (Visa/MC/Check) He was wondering so he could have the right stuff on him.

My experiences with duty is for cash over $10000. I wouldn't think the ring would count.

I agree with Willow2009. I had an engagement ring in my carry-on and was never questioned about it. In fact, they never even looked at or opened it.

There was a recent question like yours; and a VJ member who used to work with Canadian customs replied that yes, you should declare. However, in this case it was the girl coming back from the US into Canadas with her ring. Do a search in this subforum. And congrats!!!

Yeah I already looked, but they were all regarding girls coming in with the ring on their finger, and no mention if anyone knew how they will accept payment if they do require you to pay duty or put on a deposit.. *shrug* I know he should definately declare cuz i dont want my beautiful ring stuck at the border but he was wondering if he should carry a check on him or if they would take visa/MC for payment. Haven't had much luck with my google searching either.

I found this, I would call to ease your worries. This is assuming your love is flying into Toronto.

Customs Clearance & Security

Passengers arriving from other countries (including the USA) must first be cleared through Canada Customs--officially, its the Canada Border Services Agency ("CBSA")--which also coordinates any travel visa and immigration issues. There are Canada Customs stations in all three airport terminals. Canada Customs can be reached by telephone at 905-676-3640 (Terminal 1), 905-676-3537 (905-612-5416 (Terminal 3)
