I apologize for not knowing where to post this. ):

If someone from the US military goes to Canada to marry a Canadian, would the US Army recognize it with a marriage certificate and give him ->

Basic Allowance for Subsistence (BAS) and Basic Allowance for Housing (BAH)?

We were originally going to file for the K-1, but due to our time lines not seeming to meet up, we are going to marry in Canada, then wait for a year (he is deployed in March 09 for 6 months to a year) and then file for the CR-1.

Does anyone have any information on this? Thank you.

Ask him to check with whichever office deals with his allowances. I would assume they would recognise it.

Well BAS is money the give him for HIM to eat, so he should already be getting that or they make him eat at the chow hall, and unless he has a family living there, I believe they will provide him quarters and not give him BAH since you will still be in Canada, but I'm not sure.

He has to double check with his finance office.

I know that unless you are located with him in the area the pay can be different.

There may be some kind of separation pay, but not sure.

I only have access to USAF info...

Good luck.

i beg to disagree about BAH if they get married and submitted all the paper works on finance they will receive BAH & BAS on his pay regarding where the wife is staying.. this is from experience , my husband is also in the ARMY..

dont worry OP tell him to put you on DEERS as soon as you get married and get you an ID card for insurance and everything..

Basic Allowance for Housing (BAH) - BAH is paid to uniformed service members to provide housing compensation based on pay grade, zip code, and dependency status. It is payable when government quarters are not provided or when temporarily residing in barracks (i.e. basic training, job school, unaccompanied overseas assignment).

To determine how much BAH you are eligible to receive, use this BAH Calculator .

To view the 2007 Rates for BAH II, Partial BAH, and BAH-Diff click here .

Basic Allowance for Subsistence - BAS is designed to continue the military tradition of providing room and board for service members as part of their pay. This allotment is for the service member only and is not intended to cover spouses and/or family members’ room and board costs. As of January 1, 2002, all enlisted military members in a good status draw a full BAS monthly rate

Won't she need to be present to be put on DEERS? If he's based in the US that could be an issue.

nope... my husband gave our Marriage license and our son's BC to whoever was in charge in putting us on DEERS while we are in PI..

Oh ok, I just know when I worked at a US base here in the UK you had to be present as they took your photo for the ID card, which you then had to sign for.
