NBC Bans Ann Coulter For Life

For those who hate Ann Coulter, there's something to remember here: she wants publicity. That leads to her "message" getting out. If there were any conservatives on the fence before (regarding the "liberal media"), then NBC's actions have only strengthened Coulter's case and probably earned her new supporters.

I totally agree that ignoring Coulter would be the best course of action, but unfortunately in our society controversial people get the most attention (look at Paris Hilton... does she deserve any attention at all? Of course not, but she gets a lot of public attention for her antics because daddy is a billionaire). There are countless right leaning news personalities that are far more intelligent and coherent than Coulter, but they don't get any attention because they don't act like an a$$ like she does.

She wins regardless of what NBC did or didn't do.

For reasons that we don't know (outside of completely unsubstantiated rumours), Coulter was bumped from a segment on the Today show where she was scheduled to promote her book (published a couple of days before she went off on this big tirade). She was bumped in favor of Tony Blair and coverage of the Gaza crisis (pretty reasonable given the breaking news).

Noone has any idea why she was bumped, what the reasoning for it was and why someone else wasn't bumped in her place so that she could have her 10 minute book plug. That doesn't seem to stop people from engaging in gross speculation and asking questions that noone outside of network executives can answer, or indeed - are obliged to answer.

Again, Network TV make decisions like these all the time - we don't know what goes into the selection of guests on TV shows, who gets prioritised over someone else, or what the criteria are for getting bumped, if that happens (it could be something as innocuous as the time slot Coulter was scheduled in conflicted with Blair's availability). That doesn't automatically make it some sinister "liberal media" conspiracy that we need to analyse to death - quite simply its a puzzle that can't be answered and all people are doing in feeding this is pandering to their own pre-conceived notions that there is a dastardly liberal bias and that Coulter was a victim of it.

As to the title claim - that Coulter was "banned" from the network, there is no evidence of this whatsoever; and unless she offended or assaulted someone high up the food chain in the NBC hierarchy (something else we don't and can't know) such things don't really happen - certainly not over cancelled appearances to promote books.

Coulter is a drama queen. That's all that can really be said.

The bottom line is that Coulter's views are seen as extreme & hateful by a large number of people, perhaps even a majority of people. Although she has the right to express her views they are considered by many (most?) to be based on ignorance & hate (similar to the "hate" groups I mentioned, albeit to a lesser degree). It seems to me that you are unwilling to accept these facts & at the same time you discredit anyone who finds her views as being offensive by slapping on that overused & abused term label of "liberal" (I don't recall that you specifically did this, but it's a common tactic used by the right to discredit other viewpoints).

What are a few examples of this ignorance and hate? (which puts her near the camp of the Klan?)

The woman has written opinion pieces for years and is on thousands of talking head shows, the only clear "fact" that she stumbled on (that I know of) was her claiming Canada was in the vietnam war.

Well she made some pretty disparaging remarks about John Edwards and his family, 911 widows (who opposed Bush) and muslims.

She's also quoted the NYT out of context on several occasions.

The more I know about ANN, the more I like her; although I admit, I have only read one of her books.
