working in USA foreign degree

Hi all,

I just wonder if any of you have found the same problem as me, we all know it's hard to get a job at the moment but 3 years ago when I entered the county had the same problem.

Companies don't take you for serious because your degree is from another Country. I considered myself a very well prepared person, educated and with an extensive experience in my field, yet I hardly get responses from any applications and I have been not considered from others because they believe my experience in this country is not enough.

Just looking for comments perhaps it's just me

Keep plugging away! Get and keep a job that is less than you are qualified for, the more you work here, the more stable and desirable an employee you become. And keep applying for jobs you feel you qualify for, sooner or later you will get one. Good luck!

it happens a lot.. but if you have a lot of experience in your resume, that helps taclking the foreing degree issue.. also, practice your interview skills.. if you can sell yourself well, doesnt matter that you have a degree from somewherestan...

My experience is a lot better but I moved in July 06 when the job market was a lot better compared to what we have now. It was not the best especially considering I live in smallish city but companies were still hiring. My degrees were both from foreign universities but my working experience has always been with US or European multinationals. I put my working experience before my degrees in my CV because I think it is a better selling point.

I agree with the interview skill. I had interview with a headhunter one time and he told me that my eyes tend to wander around when I am talking/thinking. I was told that keeping eye contact with interviewer is important.

Hmm...It depends on the job. I encounter a number of India immigrants in the dept who are foreigners. The field that I work in is R&D. I work with design, testing, and analysis of computer hardware.

Indeed it depends a lot on the area of expertise; as well as your interview skills.

Make sure your resume is formatted according to US style -- Mexico has this knack for loooooooooooong resumes that bore HR people to death. Translate your previous positions culturally, not literally (i.e. a Coordinador de Asesores would translate as a Chief of Staff) and modify to match the industry and specific job. You might need one resume per application, modifying what you need to sell yourself good.

If you are part of a guild (i.e. accounting, engineering); you might need to get certified. Network with your peers in the area.
