Police certificates are valid for 12 months from date of issue.

So I presume that it would be ok for me to start applying for one now as I don't think it's going to take a year from now until I'll need it

Most people wait until the I-130 has been approved, then apply for the Police Certificate. The New system for the UK is much faster than the old one where you had to wait about 40 days to get the certificate, now it only takes about 2 weeks.

I see someone wrote that they were good for a year, but was told they are good for 6 months. Double check. Anyone have other thoughts?

For immigration purposes they are valid for a year.

'Please note that the Immigrant Visa Unit considers the police certificate valid for 12 months from the date of issuance, not six months as stated on the certificate.'
