A couple of questions about the interview

For those of you that have already had your interview, I just have a question or two. Or three.

Even though our interview is at 9:30AM, it's ok for us to go right when the doors open, right? What time DO the doors open?

If we're one of the first people in, will we get the visa that same day? How much longer after the interview approximately? I read somewhere that we can have it mailed to us - would you recommend that?

Thanks!

hey,

our interviews were at 9:30a and we were there around an hour before. You can go in earlier and see if you can get through the queue a little faster. Remember to only take in the required paperwork. We didn't take in our x-rays cause the doctor at the medical said we were good. Homeland Security confiscated our car remote.

I do not believe they issues the Visa's the same day. We got ours the next day after 2 or 3pm. The interview letter should have instructions as to getting it expressed posted back to you if you can't wait for it.

Congrats, this is the easiest part of the whole process.

The time of the interview doesnt really mean anything. 1st come, sort of first served!! lol Some prefer to go early, some go late!! I was there by 0745. Elevator doesnt start to run till 0800 (door opens from the REAR) and the 1st wicket where you get your line # didnt open till 0825! I walked out by 1015!!

Dont bring ANY electronics!!!!!!! No ifs and or butts!! Same goes for big bags!! I had everything in an accordian style folder!! They wil turn you away if you bring too big of a bag, then one has to go store it somewhere. There is a cafe close by that for a fee will store stuff!!

Keep change in pockets to a minimum!! As you go through an airport security type of check!!!

Keep interview letter handy, as security guard will want to see it!!

Visa's in Montreal are NO LONGER same day!! Next day at 2pm I belive or you provide them with a PREPAID express post envelope!

Best of luck

Canadians Visiting the USA while undergoing the visa process, my free advice:

1) Always tell the TRUTH. never lie to the POE officer

2) Be confident in ur replies

3) keep ur response short and to the point, don't tell ur life story!!

4) look the POE officer in the eye when speaking to them. They are looking for people lieing and have been trained to find them!

5) Pack light! No job resumes with you

6) Bring ties to Canada (letter from employer when ur expected back at work, lease, etc etc)

7) Always be polite, being rude isn't going to get ya anywhere, and could make things worse!!

8) Have a plan in case u do get denied (be polite) It wont harm ur visa application if ur denied, that is if ur polite and didn't lie! Refer to #1

Ok, thanks for some answers, guys. That sucks about no same-day visas but since we're not leaving until 10 days after interview, it shouldn't be a problem.

So we literally can't bring ANYTHING else in? I was thinking of bringing a book in case we have a long wait. Would they confiscate that too? What about my husband's wallet?

like flames said, nothing electronic or large purses, backpacks..etc. Homeland Security are the first people you'll see....you won't get past them without your interview letter and passports. Once you get past them, they'll send you down the stairs to the elevator.

My son was wearing his Heely's (wheels in the heels) and was rolling around in this waiting area. Homeland Security came out of nowhere and yelled at him for rolling around and told him he'd throw us all out if he got caught again. We took the wheels out. The next day when I went back for the Visa's...they remembered us and asked where we got the shoes.

you can take a book, I did and they didnt' question it. However I really didn't ahve much time to read it, nor did I have the mind to, I was too nervous waiting for my interview.

If your appointment is for 9:30 arrive there as soon as you can before the doors open. You don't need to queue just show the guard your interview letter and ID and they should just let you right in.

No backpacks, no large totebags or purse, just carry everything in a file folder or plastic shopping bag like from the grocery store. No scrapbooks with a bunch of pictures, just take a few pics if you want, and keep them neat in a small-ish envelope. My interviewer asked me to see only one wedding photo and that was it. Just take in the essentials of what is required on the checklist, that's it.

Also, no food or drinks are allowed, even if you're pregnant or diabetic. There's vending machines in the waiting are.

When I went, they confiscated my lip balm of all things  but I got it back from them on my way out. I left all my non-essentials and electronics (including cell phone) in a locker at the train station. If you're staying in a hotel, you can likely store it all there for the morning.

Good luck!

Something I never heard mention here and never even thought of your car starter or alarm or remote for the locks etc. they consider that an electronic to. I didn't have it the day of my interview but the next day when I went to pick up my visa I was leaving to go right away and I didn't even think of it and they took it off my car key and kept it until I left. So you might have to turn that over if you have it.
