How could i have a prob with you, this is the first time ive even interacted with you  however its clear that if someone doesnt agree with what you propose, they are attacking you. *rolls eyes*

In a situation like this...as ewok is proposing, mentor and buddy would be used the same. and should be choosen by ewok alone.

the buddy would be there to assist the newbie, show them where the proper places were to post certain things, guide them thru the guides as no one reads them when they sign up and etc.

Rules on it would be completely up to ewok. If he chose the correct ppl, he wouldnt have to worry about rules as much as those ppl would be fully knowledgeable in ALL areas of immigration. your going to take a risk of privately sending inaccurate information either way, buddy or mentor, thats why ewok would do the picking.

If you think about it, and use your common sense, everyone on VJ who has been here or has gone thru the process already, is already a mentor to the rest of VJ who is still seeking help and advice.

call me whatever you want, here or in OT, your breaking the TOS by clearly attacking me bc i do not agree with you :) also, as for giving ewok more work, setting up a buddy system by choosing a few members to buddy up with newbies, is clearly not as difficult and time consuming as creating new forums for forums we already have.

I dont call respect for someone as being a "an ####### kissing hypocrite " as you so nicely put it! :D

I foresee a danger (random, but a danger nevertheless) that newbies or newer members would begin asking their "buddies" for advice on immigration paperwork/policy/procedure. Some VJ members would give wildly inaccurate responses. I believe that this would be an overarching negative that would be difficult to prevent, despite initial warnings, and nearly impossible to reign in, once it starts. Thoughts, si man?

Great point TBone.

Good point indeed, however, there should be rules to being a buddy...example above in TBoneTX's post

What kind of rules could be created to stop people from privately sending inaccurate information?

Perhaps rather than a buddy scheme, a mentor scheme. The difference being, whereas everyone could be a buddy,

mentors would have to be appointed or elected. If information is to disseminated off forum, we need to at least have a reasonable

belief that the contributor is appropriate to the need. In my opinion, there's nothing worse than giving someone information that could

slow down their immigration efforts.

To that end, I suggest a nomination committee be created to determine criteria and method for selection of mentors.

I still think the Travel and Job forums are worthy of further consideration. Besides bringing an idea to this forum, is there an official means for consideration?

your suggesting the same thing ewok is, only you changed the name from buddy to mentor...

and even if we did a "mentor" youd still need rules, bc just as you sd with a buddy, who is to say they wont give private immigration information that is wrong.

I think the thing is, ewok needs to select the ppl he knows have the most knowledge and can trust them. I dont think we should vote on it, it should be up to ewok solely.

Nope...sorry, mentors and buddies are not interchangeable concepts. Think about it. Would a shopping buddy and a shopping mentor be the same thing?

Would a drinking buddy and a drinking mentor be the same thing? Nice try, but a FAIL.

I'm still waiting to hear about these "rules' you suggest for buddies. For the mentors we have the TOS, as well as common sense. I think if both are followed, there won't be a problem. I feel like you've got a personal issue with me or my ideas. You come here and only add boos to anything I say, and cheers to anything by an old comrade.

If this were in the OT forum, I might be tempted to suggest that you're an ####### kissing hypocrite, but I won't.

Instead, I'll ask why in earlier posts you were against creating any more work for the over worked Capt. Ewok, but now you'd like him to take on sole responsibility for a new initiative? Really, does-not-compute.

A buddy system is a pretty bizarre concept for a site where no one is required to post or participate.

I get what ewok was suggesting. it wouldnt be and shouldnt be mandatory, but when a newbie joins, they could possibly choose to have a buddy to help them around the forum. i dunno, it was ewoks suggestion, i just agree with it.

If you think about it, and use your common sense, everyone on VJ who has been here or has gone thru the process already, is already a mentor to the rest of VJ who is still seeking help and advice.
Especially the members who can't spell, can't capitalize properly while typing, can't use remotely literate or even understandable English, and give wildly inaccurate advice. Si, man. :(

The buddy/mentor concept sounds promising, but I believe that it would be a nightmare to administer and to police, or even monitor. If wrong advice were given and then followed, with deleterious results, what about liability? Also, how would the "success" of the program be measured? Finally, it has already been mentioned that posting and participation are voluntary.

I believe that Ling Ling's original idea has merit, and that it should be considered. May I ask that the discussion here include a return to that original topic?

06-04-2007 = TSC stamps postal return-receipt for I-129f.

06-11-2007 = NOA1 date (unknown to me).

07-20-2007 = Phoned Immigration Officer; got WAC#; where's NOA1?

09-25-2007 = Touch (first-ever).

09-28-2007 = NOA1, 23 days after their 45-day promise to send it (grrrr).

10-20 & 11-14-2007 = Phoned ImmOffs; "still pending."

12-11-2007 = 180 days; file is "between workstations, may be early Jan."; touches 12/11 & 12/12.

12-18-2007 = Call; file is with Division 9 ofcr. (bckgrnd check); e-prompt to shake it; touch.

12-19-2007 = NOA2 by e-mail & web, dated 12-18-07 (187 days; 201 per VJ); in mail 12/24/07.

01-09-2008 = File from USCIS to NVC, 1-4-08; NVC creates file, 1/15/08; to consulate 1/16/08.

01-23-2008 = Consulate gets file; outdated Packet 4 mailed to fiancee 1/27/08; rec'd 3/3/08.

04-29-2008 = Fiancee's 4-min. consular interview, 8:30 a.m.; much evidence brought but not allowed to be presented (consul: "More proof! Second interview! Bring your fiance!").

05-05-2008 = Infuriating $12 call to non-English-speaking consulate appointment-setter.

05-06-2008 = Better $12 call to English-speaker; "joint" interview date 6/30/08 (my selection).

06-30-2008 = Stokes Interrogations w/Ecuadorian (not USC); "wait 2 weeks; we'll mail her."

07-2008 = Daily calls to DOS: "currently processing"; 8/05 = Phoned consulate, got Section Chief; wrote him.

08-07-08 = E-mail from consulate, promising to issue visa "as soon as we get her passport" (on 8/12, per DHL).

08-27-08 = Phoned consulate (they "couldn't find" our file); visa DHL'd 8/28; in hand 9/1; through POE on 10/9 with NO hassles(!).

I should clarify.... The buddy idea was not for immigration issues at all. It was for "making new local friends" and a way to talk to local people that may have "local geographic and social" information on helping fellow new immigrants settle in. Immigration discussion is as always best on the forums.

THAT makes perfect sense.

I agree with Ling Ling, who is always very intuitive, that a careers forum for newcomers would be a wonderful asset. The US can be a jungle without paths when it comes to offering insight to people from overseas who want to land on both feet as soon as possible. Here, especially, the mentoring concept could work.

I know for a fact that new immigrants have trouble finding new work when they arrive do to bias and lack of US work history. If there is anything I can do to help (forum or not) I would be open to it.
