$ 104 if it's only food.

if only 2/3 of the total of my groceries is food, i spend like 600 a month, that means i spend 200 only in cleaning, meds, hygiene, cats, etc

We spend about 650 a month for two people. Eating organic costs money. We don't have to many other luxuries , but our thinking is that investing in healthy diet is a good investment. Also, southern California is soooo expensive. We buy almost everything at Trader Joe's and Henry's

Sorry, I still don't buy it. Fish isn't cheap. Orange juice is over $3 a gallon for the store brands, plus the cost of fresh vegetables. And they live on Long Island?

but maybe they have only 1/2 cup of orange juice and 4 oz of fish a day, plain rice and 1 serving of vegetable.

If that's all they ate, they'd be dead by now.

maybe they eat breakfast and lunch out, and that $70 they spend on only 1 meal a day.

 Or maybe what they posted isn't true.

i don't buy it's true either, that's why i was trying to prove it impossible. it is only possible if u eat regularly out or have free lunch, breakfast whatever at work.

and that if she means 70 only for food, because unless u don't shower and don't clean the house, it's double impossible u can spend that.

I think they were counting only food, not cleaning stuff, toiletries, etc. I still can't see how they can afford fish(except tuna).

If you drink water, don't buy junk/processed foods and eat a purely vegetarian diet(almost vegan) it may be possible, or if you follow a site like hillbillyhousewife.com but her plan sounds counteractive because it has so much ramen, hotdogs, etc.

Every once in a while you see some family which spends an insanely low amount on groceries because they obsessively clip coupons, rebates, etc. and plan meals to the last scrap of food - most people don't have that kind of time so spend more for convenience. Still, I have seen families on TV who actually will buy carts full of food and get money back at the store thanks to rebates! I wish I had the time and discipline to shop like that.

There are websites where people have taken the challenge to eat on under $5/day per person like most people in the world do(most in the developing countries live under $2-3 in fact) - it is very interesting and educational to read them but in this country it is hard to eat a HEALTHY diet on $5/day.

And $5 day per person would be $300 per month for two, and again basically impossible at that rate, let alone $70.

Hi Guys! I was just replying to your posts, a few people were asking "how we do it." So I just wanted to give you some insight and help.

How do we do it? Well, the largest contributor to HIGH grocery bills I believe is packaged/processed foods and meats (like chicken cutlets, fish fillets etc)I do not counnt cleaners or toiletries on the bill, just food.

The staple food is rice. We get the 20 pound bag(this lasts more than a month) we stock up when there are sales.

Our breakfast food lately is oatmeal, it is healthy, fast and easy to make and a big 2 lb 10 oz for $2.

Produce consists of onions, several type of cabbages, lettuce, tomatoes, garlic , beans(dried in a bag, not canned), squash , broccoli, okra, carrots or whatever is around. The only type we buy frozen are peas and okra. Fruits are pretty much bananas and oranges we buy fresh, I try to buy organic bananas.

Fish/Meat/Chicken- When we buy this food my husband would rather buy a WHOLE fish and steam it or he knows how to and chop it up and prepare it. If we use shrimps in a soup it is just a few . Same with the chicken, its better to buy a moderately sized chicken and cut it up yourself and that last a long time for us. As for beef we use it sparingly just a little bit in some dishes to add flavor. My husband and I are not really into beef but we do like to make barbeque in summer with a satay sauce.

I do not buy breakfast or lunch. I have breakfast at home and bring my lunch to work.I make my own coffee and use the non dairly creamer and sugar. SOmetimes we buy ice cream if we do it is the $2.99 whatever is on sale ice cream. I pretty much drink water ,orange juice on occasion. Sometimes my husband drinks some organic whole milk but its not every month. We also shop at a local SPanish grocery food chain called Bravo where their produce is substantially cheaper than say other chain grocery stores. We always buy store brand items or whatever is cheapest . For toiletries I ususally go to Target, also for soaps and cleaners . I stick to a bleach based cleaner for kitchen and bathroom, murphys for hardwood floors . I get the TIde w fabric softener poweder it ranges from $13 to $15 at target. Again I dont count cleaners in my food bill.

I know that a lot of you don't believe it. the portions we eat are a lot smaller than american, I have gotten used to this believe it or not, also more whole foods/almost no processed foods. For instance beef will be cut up into tiny pieces and added to veggies and stir fry or shop suey . Its a whole different way of cooking and how one looks at food. my husband makes his own sauces for food as well. We don't waste any food and we are careful not to make too much food for one sitting. At first I couldnt believe our grocery bill either. SInce I got married, I spending less on food and eating a lot healthier. I feel like i eat more food but I maintain my weight. I would actually like to lose some. I realize the food bill can go really high if you buy a lot of prepared foods < I know it is hard in this society to find time to prepare food and cook it. for your family............I just thank God for my husband he is able to help us. If you need any more tips let me know. Good luck!
