Sorry, I still don't buy it. Fish isn't cheap. Orange juice is over $3 a gallon for the store brands, plus the cost of fresh vegetables. And they live on Long Island?

but maybe they have only 1/2 cup of orange juice and 4 oz of fish a day, plain rice and 1 serving of vegetable.

After seeing how much people think is too much to spend for going out to dinner I'm curious how much people spend on groceries per week. Typically I spend about $120-150/wk for basics and then drop in a few times throughout the week spending $20-30 on fresh produce and meat. So when I heard that $30 is a lot for eating out I thought I must be nuts spending $30 on stuff for one meal I'm cooking on my own.

How much do you typically spend?

How many people are you purchasing for?

i spend 50-80 a week for me and two dogs and i eat very well

If that's all they ate, they'd be dead by now.

Aldi has fish for pretty cheap actually. I just got a nice package of wild caught salmon for only $3.99, which is their regular every day price, and has 4 pieces in the package. Its nice cuts too. And I got a 12 oz package of cooked shrimp for $3.99 at Ingles too. I'm makin shrimp' curry sometime this week! Probably Sunday when hubby isn't home  Tomorrow I'm going to make him some beef curry. The only meat he'll eat is beef.

I did my shopping for the week tonight and I went to 3 different stores and spent about $30 in each store. But I had to get a few of those "occasional" items, like vegetable oil, Splenda, etc...the stuff I don't need to buy every week, but always seems to run out all at the same time. Plus, I splurged on a $3 bottle of wine :P

We spend no more than $ 70 a month on food for 2 people. My husband does the shopping and cooking we eat a lot smaller portions than "americans" ................. of course we eat a lot of rice LOL He knows how to make food go far and knows how to shop! :) thank goodness!

With all due respect, $70 per month will not buy much food, clearly not enough for two. You must have meant per week?

Its true $70.00 per month! Believe it! We dont really buy any juice except orange juice , we drink mostly water for health reasons, we buy whole veggies, whole fish, fruits, not too much meat if we do buy meat it is not meant as a main dish we just put it with the veggies sometimes. I would have to say the reason why we dont spend a lot is because we dont buy hardly any "processed foods" or "fancy stuff" . And trust me we;re not starving I could actually lose weight and my hubby gained about 20 pounds since he got here ...

I don't know, but fish is expensive, at least out here. Yesterday I bought salmon for about 8 dollars. Or a pack of cooked and tailed shrimps go for 16 dollars/pound.

For us its around $70 per week I guess. I did load up on a lot of beans, lentils and rice and that sure will last for more than 2 months.

That is what Govi's family does - buy huge bags of dal and rice which is the staple of their diet, then daily(since they don't have a fridge) buy whatever veggies, fruit and dairy they eat for the day at the bazaar, also ghee, spices and tea. No processed foods, etc. - occasionally they will drink soda. I'll bet if we shopped at Patel Bros. we could do this on under $100/month - $70 might be pushing it especially since I get crabby if I don't have my weekly dosa-and-lassi fix. Cutting out Diet Pepsi would be the hardest thing for me... :crying:

$120.00 per week for 2 adults/ 2 kids that eat like adults....and it is not enough

And I bet it is difficult to feed 4 for that amount. Food prices went up drastically over the past year or so during the oil run-up, and they haven't come down at all.

I refuse to spend more it is getting OUTRAGEOUS!!!! We manage just fine!!!! I can remember being in Wally world saying gas has went down....why not these food prices????? The store manager heard me and said they have compared prices...so they are charging the same as other stores. You need to spend at least $200.00 a week at the current prices to feed a family of four.

Ok....I see I have that wrong :lol: that's the problem. One boy 13, and the girl is 11...guess that equals two bottomless pits

Did you get frozen fish? I haven't priced frozen fish for a long time. Here in MA, fresh fish is more than beef. You are lucky to find fish on sale for 4.99-5.99lb. Most of it is in the 7.99-9.99 range. Fresh swordfish can run 12.99 or so.

I live in the foothills of North Carolina, about 7 to 8 hours from the coast. There's not much fresh seafood around here. Yeah, I buy frozen.
