she did mention that they don't really buy a lot of meat and eat mainly rice, fish and vegies..

And how much does fish cost? $5 plus per pound? And how about fresh vegetables? Sorry, I mean no offense, but I think it is impossible. Not even close.

We spend no more than $ 70 a month on food for 2 people. My husband does the shopping and cooking we eat a lot smaller portions than "americans" ................. of course we eat a lot of rice LOL He knows how to make food go far and knows how to shop! :) thank goodness!

With all due respect, $70 per month will not buy much food, clearly not enough for two. You must have meant per week?

Its true $70.00 per month! Believe it! We dont really buy any juice except orange juice , we drink mostly water for health reasons, we buy whole veggies, whole fish, fruits, not too much meat if we do buy meat it is not meant as a main dish we just put it with the veggies sometimes. I would have to say the reason why we dont spend a lot is because we dont buy hardly any "processed foods" or "fancy stuff" . And trust me we;re not starving I could actually lose weight and my hubby gained about 20 pounds since he got here ...

That is amazing especially living on LI... I am hoping when hubby gets here we will save a lot on food too, since we are vegetarian maybe we can get it down to a similar figure per month. Basically hubby lives on rice, dal, veggies and occasionally momos - I know if I start eating like this I will be healthier and save money.

Is this in the Phillipines? It's not even remotely possible in the US.

if it's only food, they drink tap water, that doesn't include hygiene, cleaning products, nothing fancy, meaning no snacks, nothing for dessert, nothing canned, nothing processed, etc.

if you buy only fish, vegies, orange juice and rice and have a nutritional restricted diet, it can be possible.

Ah, ok. :) If I had to have guessed, I would thought you grew up in the midwest - perhaps some of your husband's Virginian sensibilities has rubbed off on you.

We're not all moonbat leftist types brainwashed by the BBC, you know.

The BBC is just pure evil. If everyone thought like us Mawilson, this world wouldn't suck

I don't know, but fish is expensive, at least out here. Yesterday I bought salmon for about 8 dollars. Or a pack of cooked and tailed shrimps go for 16 dollars/pound.

For us its around $70 per week I guess. I did load up on a lot of beans, lentils and rice and that sure will last for more than 2 months.

$90 to $120 a week for two. Probably a bit more when shopping at Wegmans. Their stores are nice.

Then again one of my friends in NYC has never eaten at home. He eats every single meal out. So you can only imagine what he spends.

According to the Internal Revenue Service, the 400 richest American households earned a total of $US138 billion, up from $US105 billion a year earlier. That's an average of $US345 million each, on which they paid a tax rate of just 16.6 per cent.

Exactly -- eating out is convenient for busy cities like NYC or Seattle indeed; but it gets outrageously expensive!!!

does this count beer?

Peace to All creatures great and small............................................

But when we turn to the Hebrew literature, we do not find such jokes about the donkey. Rather the animal is known for its strength and its loyalty to its master (Genesis 49:14; Numbers 22:30).

Sorry, I still don't buy it. Fish isn't cheap. Orange juice is over $3 a gallon for the store brands, plus the cost of fresh vegetables. And they live on Long Island?

And I bet it is difficult to feed 4 for that amount. Food prices went up drastically over the past year or so during the oil run-up, and they haven't come down at all.

How much do you spend on groceries a week?

Whatever I posted last week, after shopping last night, seems like the prices are about 20% higher and many items. Wife and I like salmon, running about eight bucks a pound here, now. But still cheaper than buying a big boat, fishing gear, licenses, gas, and going out to Lake Michigan trying to catch one. But not as fun.

 I would go with the second option just for fun
