Thank you again! ^___^

One last question: Will my husband need to update his info (civil status) with the Social Security Administration now that we're married?

I don't remember seeing a field for civil status (Single/Married/etc.) on the SS-5 form

nope

The only statuses that can be updated are from:

non-immigrant to immigrant (LPR) or immigrant (LPR) to citizen

YMMV

There is a form 2555-EZ where you fill out your exclusion. There's some questions about residency in that country asking if you were present for 330 days during any 12 month period that ended in 2008. Most of you were probably present in that foreign county your whole life until you moved here. It doesn't mean 330 days in calendar year 2008. It is 330 days out of any 12 month period...like Jan 2007 to Jan 2008, or October 2007 to October 2008.

OK, so this means that if I become a resident alien in (hopefully!) August 2010, I would need to have been physically present in the UK for 330 between August 2009 and August 2010. I was visiting the US for 31 days in August 2009 and another 33 days over December 09/ January 2010.

What happens if I wasn't physically present in the UK for at least 330 days? Or does it mean permanently resident in the UK for 330 days?

You're over-thinking it. And tax laws change all the time. Best to file for the visa, come over, marry before you start counting your days. And this is a thread from a year ago. There is a more current one because some of the things mentioned like the recovery rebate credit are no longer pertinent, while new things like buying a house money thing are current.

You live in the UK. You were on vacation in the US. Read publication 519 from the IRS to get details. I've forgotten those things I studied a year ago about the "days."

LOL - sounds like me to overthink ;) It was more a curiousity than anything. Off to read the 519 because we'll have a dependent child (mine) so it's an exercise in knowledge and understanding rather than practicality...

I have a question....we did the k-1 visa, got approved...he moved here in march 2009. he got his green card and ss#. he started work in july of 09.

we are filing taxed jointly, married of course.... he earned income from the uk from january 2009 until he moved here, march 26, 09. i read that we need to report that, though we will not be taxed on it.

am i right in assuming this? we are using turbo tax and i upgraded because we have this ''foreign income''. im stuck on the part thats called ''trips to the us or possessions........im hoping im on the right track so far.
