Prob with SSN

We went to the SSA office here in Washington DC yesterday and found out that my name is not in the system yet. I thought that I have to wait 10 days after my arrival to get SSN. I arrived here on Dec 12, 08. It's been 24 days already. What do you think happened? How long I have to wait for my SSN.

My first SSn took 3 weeks and the other one was a month coz I need to change it into my married name

consider the non-working days because of the holiday season. try it again next week.

You should just submit the application anyway, they will verify your immigration status "manually". It's not really manually anymore, it's done electronically now. But the wait can still be up to 6 weeks, go figure.

Our's took 7 weeks to get our SSN card in the mail, and that included 2 visits to our local office to find out what was going on.

That was BS. If your verification fails on the intital verification request they are to submit a secondary electronic and it doesn't take 6 weeks for the response to come back, Normally around a week. If the response comes back that they want to see a copy of your I-94 and it's sent along with Form G-845 for manual verification, then that could take 6 weeks or more.

You need to make sure the secondary electronic request was submitted, not the G-845 was sent. Once the secondary electronic request is submitted, check back in a week.

Why? For about the millionth time, you don't need the SS-5 when you are applying at the office.
