BISMARCK, N.D. - Police get calls about drunken drivers all the time, but rarely do they come from the alleged offender. A 17-year-old girl in Bismarck called 911 on New Year's Eve "to report herself driving under the influence," police Lt. Randy Ziegler said. "I've never heard of such a thing happening, and neither has anyone here."

The girl told authorities her location shortly before midnight Wednesday and officers found her in a parked car near downtown, Ziegler said. She failed a sobriety test and was arrested for failing to have control of her vehicle while intoxicated.

The girl, whose name was not released because of her age, was not cited for drunken driving, Ziegler said.

"Her keys were in her purse and she was parked," Ziegler said. "She did tell us that she had been driving around for hours."

Slightly on the same topic....did anyone watch the segment on 60 Minutes last night about drunk driving convictions? Prosecutors are now seeking murder charges...not just homicide.

And it's about damn time. I've witnessed first hand in our good old court system these bums receive a slap on the wrist, fined and just turned loose even after previous mulitple drunk driving episodes.

I think all cars should be equipped with the straws, if you're drunk or "buzzed" you won't be driving! It should be as mandatory as sealtbelts.

But that's just my opinion!

We just got the straws in Illinois this year. I see homeless folks and teenagers will make some good money from blowing to start cars.

That's one reason I don't think mandatory units in cars would work...there's always a way around it.

The other reason is because there are so many other drugs, besides alcohol, that can cause an accident...with a device for each one, you car

would look like a mobile hospital...and you'd have to start blowing into stuff 10 minutest before you want to start the car.

I know there's hardship cases where these drunken idiots need a car when they're sober...but I don't think they deserve the right to drive after a DUI

accident.

But I'm glad there are stiffer penalties for drunk drivers.

The straw is akin to the "interlock" that was once (mid-1970's) installed in many US-sold vehicles (also in some vehicles made in US and then sold in Canada--I happened to own one of the latter) to ensure that people fastened seatbelts (basically, it would not allow starting of the car unless the seatbelt was fastened); I suspect it was phased-out for the analogous reason that it was easy to defeat (such as by permanently fastening the belt and sitting over it).
