I just wonder, for how many months after entering the US do you start to work again? And is it hard to find a job if English is not your native language? And are any of you working at home instead? If so, what kind of job is it?

I really want to know because I came to the US about a month ago holding K-1 visa. And I'm just married a few days ago in the US. I really want to know more about people's working condition in the US.

Thanks a lot for sharing!

Now that you are here in the U.S. and are married, you will need to apply for AOS (Adjustment of Status) and EAD (Employment Authorization) in order to be able to work in the U.S. You can apply for your SSN card at your local SSA office now.

You should send your AOS and EAD applications, along with AP (Advance Parole) if you want to travel outside the U.S. before the AOS is approved, as soon as possible. The EAD is taking about 2 months for approval right now.

Good luck.

After receiving the EAD, some find a job right away. For others, the job search can take months and months and months. Each situation is different.

What i want to know is if it's difficult for an immigrant to find a job even if he/she has got an EAD.
  • The question is not "how many months after entering the US..." but rather "how soon after receiving your EAD and SSN...". There is probably no universal answer as some might go for whatever job they can find (and thus hook something rather quickly) while others may be more selective (and thus take longer to find that first job). Case in point: It took me about 3 months after I had my EAD to find a suitable position (that was 10+ years ago) while Nani hooked a job within 48 hours and another and better one within 72 hours of having her EAD and SSN.

  • Job prospects also depend a great deal on where in the US you are looking. Overall, I would say, they are pretty good.

  • If your spoken English is nearly as good as your written English appears to be, don't worry about English not being your native language.

Good Luck with your jobsearch!

As the immigrant I am going to tell you this...

It is pretty easy to find a job in the US (depending on where you're living and the type of experience you have). And as many, the change of environment seems to be the "big bad bear" in the way. However, it is not so very difficult either. Most people are friendly, and if they know that you just got into the country, some of them might try to help to make you feel at home. (of course you will find your eventual a$$ ... but dont mind them).

As at how fast, definitely, I would recommend monster.com, and that you start interviewing with different recruiters, they are of great help when you still dont have your documentation, because they are somewhat familiarized with the immigration process, and it might be easier for them to explain it to the potential employer; you might be able to find a job that waits until you have the permit to start working.

It took my husband approx 7 months to find a job once he arrived; 5 months after he received his EAD. He busted his @$$ looking, he was literally walking into small factories and restaurants everywhere and filling out applications. Out of all those apps, he got three calls for interviews. He was offered the job at all 3 - he chose the one with a long standing company with a solid track record ....less pay but fantastic benefits, including tuition reimbursement, which will really help us. .

I agree with the posters who said your success in finding work quickly depends on where you are in the country and what your qualifications are. If my husband had my credentials, he find a job in a blink of an eye. But he does not, so he had to be patient.

Thanks for all your sharings. It seems that it's not that hard for some people to find jobs. And I'm sure it'd depend on the part of the country and one's expections.

ET-US2004,

You know the problem is I think my spoken English is not as good as my written English (Esp. I never learnt American English in my whole life). :P So the listening is think the biggest problem I have.

rob&ana,

Ok i'll definitely go to that website to take a look! Thanks!
