How we met...

I have heard that meeting someone through a family member or friend could be frowned upon and I'm wondering if the way my fiance and I met could hurt our chances. My dad moved to England years ago and became friends with my fiance, well my dad moved back to the states and my fiance came to visit him here and that's when I first met him. Will that be looked down upon? I'm thinking it really shouldn't matter but I've heard otherwise and now I'm a little concerned. Any thoughts?

It seems that is more of a negative when it is involving a "high fraud" country.

Someone can come along with experience to help, hopefully

"you fondle my trigger then you blame my gun"

Timeline: 13 month long journey from filing to visa in hand

If you were lucky and got an approval and reunion with your loved one rather quickly; Please refrain from telling people who waited 6+ months just to get out of a service center to "chill out" or to "stop whining" It's insensitive, and unecessary. Once you walk a mile in their shoes you will understand and be heard.

Thanks!

I don't see how that could hurt - it actually shows he knows your family, which my attorney said was beneficial and I have to agree with the "high fraud" country statement - UK is not that.

Agreed with as above, I think it would only be a problem if it could be interpreted as some sort of "deal" between two families.

K1 129 days to approval

K1 179 days to interview

EAD 45 days to approval

AP 45 days to approval

AOS 69 days to approval

It's easy to start freaking out about every little thing when you first start out. :D

Right, meeting through family is really only a problem when a high fraud country is involved. In this case it's probably an unneeded plus.

I would agree!

I met Umit because her brother married a woman that was the niece of a guy that works with me in the US.

Umit never intended on marrying anyone, but I guess I got lucky...

I agree to a point. In the immigration arena, we need to prepare to deal with things we can't change, because they raise red flags. You can't change how you met your fiance or spouse but you can prepare to deal with the immigration issues your "meeting" might raise. For instance how you met a Turkish SO is of more significance than one from the UK.

The OP, met in person by chance, just like most people do when they meet somebody from the same town. If you met somebody from Turkey because a co-worker introduced you to their relative (or something to that effect) then that can raise far more questions. If Vietnam, China or the PI, more questions yet. If you're in a legitimate relationship with somebody you met that way, you can't change it but you can prepare to deal with the questions surrounding it.

However you met, and from whatever country the SO is from, the Truth is always the best answer.

agree completely - just wanted to add my humble opinion: the truth is always the ONLY answer.

Stick with it and you will be fine!

My cousin introduced us. It didn't come up during the interview.

It is part of the K-1 application - where and how you met.

So far, while dealing with anything visa-related, I've learned that the truth doesn't really get you far, if anywhere at all.

That's just my humble opinion and the experience I have backs me up on this one.

*shrug*

Because it is right and fair to everyone else to be honest, and lies are not fair and in fact screw over those who are honest, like we have been, I will only tell the truth.

However, I'm still stupid enough to believe that if I keep telling the truth, the things will eventually start working out. We'll see how stupid, in the end, I'll end up being.

Thanks for all the responses and support! I took the "honesty is the best policy" route and explained exactly how we met when I submitted the paperwork and after reading all the responses I'm so glad I went with my instincts. This entire process is so unique, and no one can possibly understand it unless they have gone through it themselves which is why I'm so grateful for this board. Thanks everyone!
