Oregon looks at taxing mileage instead of gasoline

And yet in most states the gas tax that is supposed to go to highway infrastructure doesn't. They throw it away somewhere else, which is why they're trying to find other ways to nickel and dime us to death. So they'll have more money to squander and fritter away on #######.

In North Carolina the proposal was to add the mileage check to the annual emissions test inspection. The Emissions inspection would then report your mileage to the state DOT and they would send you a bill for the mileage driven for the year. This would save the state from having to install GPS trackers like Oregon is proposing. They would also be billing you for any mileage driven outside the state, so there goes tourism. And then it would also encourage us to figure out how to hack our odometers.

I say let them figure out how to manage the money they already get from us and put it where its supposed to go in the first place
