Divorce and returning green card before it arrives/Japan

Hello,

I'd like to ask if there is a way to stop uscis from sending/issuing the green card to my address because I believe according to the embassy in Tokyo the green card must be returned in person, which is a distance from Kyoto.

My wife came from Japan and we have been trying to work it out, but it looks like we need to know our options for divorce, which has been hard for us to research.

We live close to Columbus, Oh, which apparently has a USCIS office. Could we possibly wait for the card to arrive in the 2 to 6 months we were told it would arrive, and then just return the card to the Columbus uscis office?

Any help in general on divorce would be helpful in the case of male U.S. citizen married to Japan Japanese wife.

Filing for divorce in Japan is not so complicated as well. It only requires my wife by herself to go to the city hall in japan and file. She needs a divorce certificate from the U.S. however. So I would also like to ask for information on divorce in Ohio and a possible timeline on when my wife can receive the divorce certificate to take back to Japan.

We are together talking everyday about us, and as much as we went through to get the green card, it's hard to believe we're so soon thinking about divorce. She arrived in the U.S. Dec 16, 2008, just two weeks after the successful final interview in Tokyo on Dec. 1.

Thank you all so much.

Sounds like one or both of you are being a bit hasty.

I'm reporting this to be moved to the appropriate forum where you'll get better advice.

So sad to hear that after all the waiting and effort, that it's not working out.

Good luck.

I too think you are being a little too hasty. Your wife has only been here less than a month - are you really ready to end it so soon? There are options.... marriage counseling, taking some time apart, etc

At this point, returning the green card is really not an issue. If she's already in the US, she already has the status. If she eventually chooses to give up the status, she'll be able to do so easily enough. No need to alter your lives over such a small issue.

Your (ex-)wife is not required to give up her status because of your (upcoming)divorce. I hope that the two of you will use some of the advice that other members have posted such as marriage counseling, etc. If in the end it truly will not work, your wife should know that she is legally able to remain in the USA as a permanent resident as long as she requires now that she has I-551 status.

Also, if divorce is truly the final option, she may be able to look into filing at a Japanese consulate in the USA. I'm not positive that they will be able to help her, but it may be an option.

Best of luck to you!!!
