Eh, I can understand it. A baby crying is natural...and eventually they'll stop. But people yackin' on cellphones....

.................will eventually stop.

As for cellphones playing havoc with a plane's system....pretty much ANY RF signal (including CD players) can have an adverse effect,

but the systems can also be engineered to ignore them.

Oh, I see. It's just that I wondered why certain "approved electronic devices" (such as the CD player you mention) are allowed to be used once the plane reaches a certain altitude, whilst the use of cell phones is strictly prohibited at any time. Still, I'm sure you've got all the answers, Ling Ling.

So don't worry, if you accidentally leave your CD player or phone on during a flight,

you're not going to take the plane down. :)

Thanks. That's very reassuring.

Heh, maybe not ALL the answers, but this one stems from conversations I've had with commercial and military pilots.

Years ago I was on an Al Italia flight, and couldn't understand why I had to turn off my DVD player (approved on most airlines).

My pilot buddies explained about RF and how there's a lot of tweaking (engineering) that takes place in setting up the cockpit to

ignore certain RF output. Unattended RF can wreak havoc on cockpit instruments.

Here's an article about cellphone use on UK airlines.

Someone should introduce an adults only airline. God knows we could all do with a break away from other people's offspring.

That is such a FANTASTIC idea, it really is. Once this economy sorts itself out, let's hope some bright young entrepeneur does exactly that. I would WILLINGLY pay a couple of hundred bucks over the odds for a child-free flight.

Isn't it? I think I might write to Richard Branson.... I am sure there is a hippy do-gooder law somewhere that says "brats cannot be excluded" so on second thoughts lets just call the airline "porn air" and see how many parents book their kids a seat ....
