maybe a silly question but what do you do after your 10 years GC expires? I thought we would have it valid for an indefinite amount of time.

what if you don't want to become an american citizen? do you know how it works?

hello...I am not trying to rain on your parade, but if I am not mistaken, this GC is valid for only 2 years and you must reapply 90 days prior to that 2 years to remove the conditions of this GC. If I am wrong, I am certain I will be corrected by the helpful people in this room. :star:

I think it depends on the visa that they have. If they have a CR-1 and have been married for 2-years before entering the US then they will receive a 10-year greencard. I may be wrong but I'm pretty sure I read this somewhere.

I think mrsbonky and mrbonky has been married for over 2 years that is why they got the 10 year permanent residency card.

anybody who has been married over 2 years gets to receive 10 years green card.

Congrats mrsbonky. I don't know if the same rule apply with people who receive 10 years gc. do you need to wait 3 years from receiving the gc before you could apply for citizenship or would you start counting the 3 years from date of entry?

You would need to renew. this LINK might help explain it more.

my country allows dual citizenship, with that, we will definitely opt to apply for naturalization here after 3 years so we would then be free from USCIS forever. Dealing with USCIS is such a hassle on time and on the wallet and I am so waiting for the day I won't need to deal with them again, that is the only reason why I want to be naturalized.

A&N Congrats

LeaAndBen, for those who received a conditional GC they will have to remove conditions 90 days before the expiration date. For persons who got their 10yrs GC they will have to file the I-90 to renew the card and that is done no earlier than 6 months before it expires. It is stated that you can never lose your permanent resident status because your GC has expired. Now I am NOT talking about conditional residency; You will definitely have to remove conditions or else it is GC ba-bye. Regarding the PR holders, all that happens is that you will not be authorized to work or travel overseas as you cannot prove your residency if asked to prove it. However your status remains - permanent resident. This is a fact.

For those who are considering naturalization they can apply for citizenship three years after they were initially granted their GC. According to the website, for those who apply for removal of conditions and received the permanent residency card through adjustment of Status due to marriage to a CITIZEN, you can apply for citizenship one year later which is a total of three years after being granted legal residency. The rule is simply three years after initial approval. Those who adjusted through marriage to a permanent resident will have to wait for 5 years to naturalize.
