i went to the social security admin and wasnt able to apply for a number. the officer toold me that i have a misspelled name in the immigration record. how that happened? i mean, whose fault is that. i remember when i was in the immigration of POE, they just swiped my visa then all my record appeared. but i wasnt sure if they typed something in their computers.. the person in the SSA told me to go to the immigration and have it fix. do you think im gong to have huge problems with that error in name. my uncle told me that i might have the same problem with my GC.

are you on k1?

how long have u been here in the states? i believe you're still not in their system if ur only been here less than 2 weeks... u can re-apply 2 weeks after your arrival in the US... and if its really true that your name is mispelled, then i really dont know how it happened or what to do exactly. all i can do is guess (which is not helpful)...

hope you'll find more answer here on vj... God bless

Citizenship N-400

4/15/2010- sent my N-400 via fedex overnight

4/16/2010- signed and delivered

4/29/2010- check cleared

What type of visa are you on?

Can you see what's misspelled?

When we went to the SSA, we filled out the form, and off it went to the DHS for verification. We made changes later. What was mispelled? The I-94 you filled out? You can make corrections to the record when you file for AOS and apply for your EAD. The name you put on your AOS application will become your legal name, and can be corrected again when you go for your interview. Just accept whatever the SSA shows on your record, for now, and make corrections later.

That would not be reason to not accept your SSN application. SSA has procedures to verify your status when there is a name misspelling in the system. Also there can be a one letter error when verifing your status and the application can still be prcessed.

my petition is IR2-child of USC. I went to SSA,5days after my arrival then they checked my immigration records & asked for my birth certificate. the SSA officer told me that part of my 1st name was put in with my middle name. I really have a long name.. then he said I can't have my SSN unless that is fixed..

You wouldn't have an I-94 since you arrived with a immigrant visa, but if you are over age 18 and checked off on the DS-230 that you wanted an SSN, you might receive the card within 3 weeks of your arrival without submitting an application at an SSA office.

Well since you arrived with an immigrant visa the SSA office is supposed to wait 3 weeks before inputing an application or you could possibly wind up with 2 SSNs if you checked off on the DS-230 that you wanted an SSN.

But as I said before if your name is messed up in the verification system on the initial verification there are steps that they can try to verify your status without you needing to go to immigration to have the record corrected.

i remember i answered yes to the DS230 form about SSN. so i dont need to go to the SSA to apply for one right? but the officer in the SSA told me to go to the immigration and have t corrected by myself. .. i am now confused. my sis applied for a SSN a week after she arrived and did not encounter any problems, even with her GC. they all arrived afetr 1 month.

If you checked off on the DS-230 and are age 18 or older, wait 3 weeks after entering the United States to receive your SSN card. If you do not receive it within 3 weeks, go into an SSA office to apply. If the SSA employee says your name is misspelled in their system, tell them to submit a secondary electronic verification request or send a Form G-845 to verify your status. If they don't understand what you are talking about or will not do it ask to speak with a manager.

i guess he did not know what to do because he made me do his job. he wants me to do directly in the immigration. maybe its state specific?

just wondering how did you know those things?

SSA is as federal agency... It is not state specific as to regulation.

YMMV
