How young is too young?

Been reading some posts lately about younger fiancee's and am curious, is there a law about this in Vietnam? I just assumed (perhaps incorrectly) that 18 was the legal age to marry. But in the Phillipines it seems anyone 21-25 has to get parental permission. I never heard of this before.

What is the youngest fiancee you have heard of from Vietnam? A few people mentioned marriage too young doesn't last. Isn't that somewhat stereotyping? I think it would depend on the maturity of the person. Not all Vietnamese are immature, just not like all young Americans are immature. And further, do you think a young fiancee (provided that the USC isn't toooooooo much older) will pose a problem with HCMC? In my opinion, over 18 is old enough to fall in love. Just curious on our VN communities thoughts on this topic.

Take care

True, for most of us age doesn't come into play much but... places like Sydney are entirely different kind of 'experience' than is HCMC. ;)

I have no idea about the laws in Vietnam regarding age of consent so hopefully someone more familiar will chime in but I will say that things such as age difference, recent divorce of either party, short courtship...etc... can all send up a red flag at a high fraud post that often does make it more difficult. The best you can do is educate and prepare yourself then provide all the bona-fide and ongoing relationship evidence you can.

good luck! :)

It depends on where your fiance born into which culture. In vietnam i think 18 years age will have red flags with CO in HCMC, 25+ age is a good idea for marriage. too young CO thought as been fraud for a purpose migrating to US for better life: education, job, divorce and has new marriage etc..

What do you guys think is "too young" for marriage? Any VN VJ members marry a younger person from VN? How old was your fiancee? To me, that is the problem with this process - no thought given to individuality of the person. Everyone is just lumped into one big category - old, young, white, black, vietnamese, good, bad, rich, poor. UGH.

Age gaps are situation specific. Why not offer the specifics of your situation, in terms of age gap for further analysis?

Vague questions, receive vague answers. If you want better advice, more details are required.

This is a good point...sorry about that, I am a bit vague on public forums as you never know who might be reading. But yes, I asked this question for me but also because I never really stop to think about "too young" or not issues. My man is early 20's and I am in my mid-thirties. What is funny is I honestly never stop to think about it, we just click. Truth be told, he is much more mature and wise than I am. I may know more about life (and I think that is more being from America vs. my age) but he is a lot more serious about marital commitments and the spirituality behind loving someone for a lifetime than I am. I have seen a slight stereotype against Vietnamese people, that young for them = naive. This worries me in terms of the HCMC consulate lumping every Vietnamese person, man or woman, into one category when everyone is an individual. Anyway I can circumvent possible problems with this notoriously tough consulate regarding our age gap? Thanks

As just the US, minimum legal marriage age in VN is 18.

But when a 45 or above guy asks to marry an 18 year-old female, that will raise eyebrows, not just for the CO, but any other individual related to the two subjects.

And I've already known too many "Viagra-candidate" men (of all races) coming over there and back with 18 to 20 year-old VNese females. You tell me if that's love or else.

Please, at least when you try to cheat, cover up your tails!

PS> To add my thought that Anna Nicole Smith's love for that 90 year-old oil billionaire is REAL!!!! so is her boobs!

LOL!

On a heavier note, I think a lot of these out of the country relationships are not "love based" but that also doesn't mean they are fraud. A young Vnese girl wants a better life, an old man wants a hot young girl in the sack. They like each other, have a relationship, maybe not true love and soulmates - but honestly, how many American marriages have that either?

DPNH, see any problem with my age and a younger guy? Not sure if it makes a difference, but we look the same age in photos.

I've dated both younger and older in the past. Age is a factor but not a primary one for me. I just turned 29 years old and my fiancee is about six months older than me. In Thai culture, that is quite old to be getting married for the first time. In the past year some of her high school students as well as other teachers have said things like "We are concerned that if you don't get married soon you'll turn into an old maid."
