Hi everyone,

I have a few questions for the MENA forum. My husband is from Egypt and he just recently became a U.S. citizen, I have read different articles on the web that says any egyptian taking on a foreign citizenship must notify the proper egyptian officials. Is this true? If it is, who do we need to notify? In the near future we would like to go to Egypt to visit family and I don't want there to be any problems arising because he will be using his US passport and not his egyptian one. Will he need to apply for a visa to enter Egypt? What would happen if he didn't notify the proper egyptian officials?

This is a very good question and one that I would like to know the answer to as well. Hopefully it is not necessary. If its anything like this visa process or government paper work then it would surely be a headache. And curious too, what would happen if Egypt wasnt notified of American citizenship?

Here's a link to the Egyptian Consulate's website that explains what he needs to do: http://www.egy2000.com/ft05l.html looks like MORE paperwork!!! UGH...

My ex was a USC and Egyptian Citizen and I'm not sure he ever did this... he used his Egyptian passport when entering Egypt (NO he doesn't need a visa!!!) and his US Passport when entering the USA.

When your husband is in Egypt... he's an Egyptian citizen. All Egyptian laws, rules, etc. apply to him and the US will not do much if anything to intervene on his behalf for almost ANY reason. In other countries he can request aid from either government... but when he's here, he's a USC, and when he's in Egypt he's an EC..

Are you planning to become an EC? If so the info for that process is in the same website.

Thanks for replying. I showed my husband your answer to my question and he says it doesnt pertain to him because he doesnt want dual citizenship. He says that because the US doesnt recognize dual citizenship that he has no need to apply to keep his egyptian citizenship as he is already a US citizen. As for me, I have no desires of becoming an egyptian citizen.

Is there a process to renounce the Egyptian citizenship? Otherwise wouldn't you automatically have dual citizenship? I'm not sure how that works in Egypt, but in Tunis, when you take US Citizenship, you still retain the Tunisian citizenship and you must enter Tunisia on your Tunisian passport, and of course reenter the US on that passport? Maybe they have a process, but if you were born in Egypt you don't have to "renew your citizenship" or anything like that. Right? I do not know if Egypt has benefits, but Tunisia does when you're older, medical, educational, retirement, etc and you need to keep your Tunisian passport and keep it current / ID card to be able to get those benefits. Even when you plan on living your life in the US, you just never know what life could bring or when you might want to go back to your country for any period of time or for any government services. I don't think it takes anything away from the US Citizenship to keep the passport current from your home country.

Sorry I misunderstood the question.

Your husband is totally incorrect if he believes the US does not "recognize dual citizenship". I was married to a dual citizen and know hundreds of them both here and in Egypt.

If he wishes to revoke his Egyptian Citizenship he should mail them his passport with a letter telling them this... or call them and ask them how to do it. Since I doubt there's much demand for information about how to do this, there is no info on their website about this.

Personally I think if he did this he might not chose to visit Egypt again.. I don't think Egyptians take kindly to Egyptians who voluntarily, for no apparent reason, renounce their citizenship.

I have to agree - I know plenty of Egyptian/American dual citizens. They have both citizenships as do their children. The US doens't recognize the Egyptian citizenship, however like someone else said, using the Egyptian passport going into Egypt and American passport going into the US is fine. I know many people that do that.

However I also know people who simply let their Egytian passport expire, never applied for a new one and just used the American passport. As far as I know they never had their citizenship revoked, they just used the US passport...

What do you mean they don't "recognize" the Egyptian citizenship?????? They sure will if you get in trouble in Egypt and come to the Embassy for help! They will recognize it and shut the door! Where do these ideas that the US doesn't allow or recognize dual citizenship come from????

You are probably totally right about EGyptians letting their passports expire... don't want to deal with the bureacracy of getting it renewed, but that's hardly the same as sending it back to them and telling them to keep it!

Well, regarding dual citizenship, this is directly from the USCIS website:

(a) Dual Citizenship . The concept of dual citizenship means that a person is a citizen of two countries at the same time. Dual nationality laws and policies depend on each country. The U.S. Government recognizes that dual citizenship exists, but does not endorse it as a matter of policy because of the problems that it may cause. Dual citizens owe allegiance to both the United States and the foreign country. They are required to obey the laws of both countries. Either country has the right to enforce its laws, particularly if the person later travels there. There may be a conflict with the U.S. laws, which may cause problems for the dual citizen. Additionally, dual citizenship may limit the United States Government’s efforts to assist United States citizens abroad.

I would never want to renounce my citizenship - but that's just me - but I do know of certain countries that don't permit their citizens to hold dual citizenship like China, Italy, Germany. Sometimes you are allowed to if you seek permission and give a valid reason...Germany does this.

My husband doesn't want to renounce his Egyptian citizenship. He just thinks having dual citizenships will cause problems especially since the official officiating over the oath ceremony told everyone that were becoming citizens that day that the US doesn't recognize dual citizenships.
