10 inaugural balls - necessity or excess? Granted people must buy their own drinks served in plastic cups and some sit on the floor for lack of chairs - but 10?

how many balls did the others have? and don't forget the economy is ever changing so the inflation factor per "ball", per pres. inauguration has to be considered.

just my .0306050809070102 cents worth.

But see it doesn't matter how many prior presidents had. One thing I heard in the speech (which was great by the way!) was that he asked us, the American people, to make sacrifices, take less hours at work to save anothers job was his example - yet where are his cut backs, his family's sacrifice? A leader leads by example. So why 10 when 1 would suffice? I think he recognizes that the collective "we" put stock and value in places that it shouldn't be. I realize he didn't plan the balls but he didn't need to attend either.

Uno, Bush had nine balls in 2005 and according to some people, he should've been using that money for the Iraqi American people instead of throwing himself parties during such a time of crisis.

Everyone looked great...especially Michelle! She was beautiful. :star: The amount of people who went to the Inauguration looked overwhelming and I felt my claustrophobia kicking in just from watching it all.

EXACTLY my point. Wasteful use of money in ANY administration should be halted.

Michelle did look fabulous I'll bet the cost of it could have fed my family for several months.

Just so as not to be biased - one of Cindy McCain's dresses (can't remember where she wore it) would have fed my family for 5 YEARS!! It's absolutely ridiculous what people will spend on attire, so foolish.

Sylvia, is Obama himself in charge of planning this "party", the festivities, and the money going towards it? Also, I thought it was stated that the Inauguration Committee is in charge of paying for it and not the taxpayers...is this incorrect?

LL you are correct. The point though is he knows what is being spent and yet has done nothing to cut back the spending. Is this the future attitude going to be also? As I said earlier, allowing excess in one instance will only lead to it being allowed in other areas. The lines become greyed.

The method Inauguration committee used to raise money for this event is the best I have ever seen in recent history for every American for the following reasons;

a) Lobbyists and special interests were not given the chance to fund it as was the case in 2004, hence they will have very less influence in his government

b)The maximum donation one can make was also lowered ie In 2004,private individuals and organizations made donations upto 250k but in Obamas case, the cap was set at 50k

c)You can google it online and see the people that paid for this and how much they all paid

d)Obama did not make use of taxpayers money in his election and in his inaguration too, ordinary people like me and you are also funding it so that special interests will be dissapointed

e)Finally Obama is a person of color and we are on the verge of history,people from all over the world are in DC to be part of this, hence the security, medical, shelter demands will be so high, and also to combat this, the government are forced to protect me and you in DC so that we can have a safe transfer of power.

f)Since this election, how so many threats have been made over the internet regarding the safety of his life, because of this, his security details are also high

g)Finally, Obama has no control over the number of people that will be in DC, and moreover it will be a big insult to the US if anything regarding security and safety goes bad.

g)please allow us to enjoy this day, this story does not happen everyday, it is a once in a lifetime event which is only possible in my beloved country, the US.

:thumbs::thumbs::thumbs:

I normally try to stay out of this thread, but I just thought I had to put something in here. The majority of the extra money goes to security to ensure that some crazy doesn't come to kill our new president. Those who were in power before yesterday spent billions in the name of our security in Iraq and never complained about the cost. Now the money spent on the security of our new president is being ridiculed. That is what doesn't make sense to me.

And those same are speaking as if this money is being kept away from our economy. This money spent was spent on our own soil. It was spent in paying security personel - who are American citizens in need of fiscal help. The DC economy needed help and this inauguration is helping those of us who live in the DC area. An area that is regularly neglected. This money is going directly to the American people.

I never condone spending any excessive amount of money on clothing; I do believe everybody except Sara Palin pays for their own clothing. Cindy McCain is blessed to be able to afford excessive amounts on her clothing. God's blessings of abundance are for everyone who seeks them.

I agree regarding God's blessings, but to whom he blesses with much - much is expected. Take Rick Warren for example he keeps 10% of what he earns and gives away 90%, so God continually blesses his ministry and he keeps blessing others.

Also by paying so much for a piece of material well actually paying for the label, it is only reaffirming what we value and how misplaced our values are.

Yes, Amen to that.

Cindy McCain is know for philanthropy. Amazing what people can do with money and time.

I kept on crying. I am the biggest baby. I cried when my son told me he watched it instead of going outside at lunch. I cried when they danced. I cried when they announced him during the ignaugeration.

Beyonce was amazing as always. You could see her sincere honor in her eyes. WOW

I got tired I had to head to bed after the first dance.

Did anyone watch the first dance? I just saw it on Youtube and I almost cried (again, lol). I'm such a sap, but Beyonce's voice was so beautiful.

Hahahaha!! :rofl: Looks like you are just as much of a sap as I am. I was suprised that I didn't have a full-blown cry fest yesterday. Guess I used all of my tears on Election Day. I woke up crying that day. :lol: :lol:

I spoke to Boaz yesterday and she said she had a lot of fun. I could tell that she was completely pumped up from the event because her voice was extremely excited, lol. She said it was VERY cold there, but the energy from the crowd was amazing. Also, she sat near and saw a lot of famous people and even got pictures. I'm officially jealous of her. :P
