Hi all,

I sent my DS230 and supporting documents off to the NVC on January 20 registered through Canada Post. It has now been 20 days and they still have not gotten it to the destination. They refuse to put out a search until it has been missing 30 days. One operator at the Customer Service Centre told me that registering a letter does not guarantee delivery.... Don't you think putting a 50 cent stamp on an envelope and throwing it in the mailbox should guarantee delivery? Wow!

I agree. I ordered something from the UK on Monday. I got it Yesterday. It had a value of 40.00.. if it was Canada I would still be waiting and when it did come Id have to go pick it up and pay duty and GST. Canada post blows.. I only use their Xpress post USA and it was efficient.

Hmm, I orderd a CD from the UK and it got to my home in British Columbia in 4 days. That was regular shipping. I think it was $4 or pounds for shipping.

I've always found Canada Post to be nice to deal with.

Well I have to say I was impressed with Canada Post

Vermont service center sent me a letter on December 4th

addressed to my address and city but to the wrong province and no postal code

I got it on Dec 8th....so 4 days for a letter that was incorrectly addressed....I have to say was pretty good service.

Canada post does seem to be slow!! But what do you expect? We Canadians get around by sled and dog!!

Canadians Visiting the USA while undergoing the visa process, my free advice:

1) Always tell the TRUTH. never lie to the POE officer

2) Be confident in ur replies

3) keep ur response short and to the point, don't tell ur life story!!

4) look the POE officer in the eye when speaking to them. They are looking for people lieing and have been trained to find them!

5) Pack light! No job resumes with you

6) Bring ties to Canada (letter from employer when ur expected back at work, lease, etc etc)

7) Always be polite, being rude isn't going to get ya anywhere, and could make things worse!!

8) Have a plan in case u do get denied (be polite) It wont harm ur visa application if ur denied, that is if ur polite and didn't lie! Refer to #1

How slow Canada post actually is: when I lived in Calgary, it would take 4-7 days for a rejection letter written and posted in downtown Calgary to reach my home; oft almost two weeks if the letter was posted from MB or BC.

And I've had even worse experience doing address-change form:

  • in US, this is free, you just complete one and mail--in a few days, letters addressed to you will have yellow redirection labels
  • in Canada, you fork out for this--last I checked, it was C$40 for in-Canada change of address and C$60 for change of address to US--add GST to that and you get C$42.80 and C$64.20 as actual payment.

Even worse, Canada post cannot seem to tell whether it is individual or family. In 1994, I actually filed the change of address (for individual--and I had done multiple checks to ensure this)--and got several letters redirected to me which were for my dad (I was able to redirect these to his office at U of C--by placing on address labels overcovering the original and placing US stamps on). I had to call Canada post to cancel this redirection. Not only did I not get the expected quality for over C$60, but incurred additional cost (to resend the documents to U of C)--and they don't even have the courtesy to refund for such disservice!
