Hello everyone,

I hope someone can answer my question.

I have filed for a K1 visa for my fiance and We are currently waiting to recieve a package from the embassy. I understand that I have to file an I-134 but I'm not sure if I meet the criterias. I am a graduate/professional student with no source of income except the student loans. I will graduate in a few months and will be doing a residency program that will pay enough for me to meet the requirements. BUT I DO NOT HAVE AN INCOME RIGHT NOW and have never filed income taxes because I've been a full time student for the past 8 years. I can show that I have some savings and my fiance can send me his savings too if necessary. but as far as an income goes, student loans are all there is. Can someone tell me what I need to do please?!

THANK YOU!!!

You must find a cosponsor with sufficient annual income above the poverty level to support your I-134, along with all the necessary documentation as shown on the instructions.

Thanks for your reply!

Does the co-sponsor have to live in the States?! Can it be my fiance's father who resides in Iran?!

The co-sponsor must be a US Citizen or Legal Permanent resident with a credible relationship to either the petitioner or beneficiary.

Alternatively about $55,000 in liquid assets, in the petitioner's name and in the US will usually suffice.

Thank you so much for your prompt reply.

you said that the co-sponsor has to have a credible relationship to either me or my fiance. Can the co-sponsor be a friend?!

Thank you again for taking the time to reply!!!

Sure. By credible, I mean a reasonable person would need to believe the sponsor would actually step up. As such, your lifelong friend is a more credible choice than an aged grandparent.

Another question just came to my mind.... sorry for all these questions. I know they might seem very stupid.

Do I have to prove that I'm friends with my co-sponsor?! I can come up with pictures that go back to highschool days...

Yes, a good friend can be co-sponsor if he or she is a US citizen or legal permanent resident. No, there needs to be no proof of the friendship at all, just the signed paperwork.

No need to include evidence you know the sponsor. They are going to fill out a form and sign it under penalty of perjury. In section three, they'll state the beneficiary's relationship to sponsor as " fiance's friend" or "spouse's friend" as the case may be. There's always a possibility the relationship would be questioned, so the beneficiary should be able to answer basic questions about who the co-sponsor is to their petitioner. Usually a single sentence answer would be enough.
