That's the hospital where Jinky gave birth to Joshua. :)

Nessa, I don't know if you've heard this rumor, but a nurse friend of ours recommended to Jinky to really cut back on any sugar, especially in the Third Trimester because it will cause the baby to gain a lot of weight.

I'm not an expert on pregnancies but how do these babies get so big? Is it based on the diet the mother is following? Is it also based on how much weight the mother gains during pregnancy? Or is it simply genetics?

Diana

Large for gestational age (LGA) is a term used to describe babies who are born weighing more than the usual amount for the number of weeks of pregnancy. LGA babies have birthweights greater than the 90th percentile for their gestational age, meaning that they weigh more than 90 percent of all babies of the same gestational age.

The average baby weighs about 7 pounds at birth. About 10 percent of all babies weigh more than 4,000 grams (8 pounds, 13 ounces). Rarely do babies weigh over 10 pounds.

.....

Some babies are large because their parents are large; genetics does play a part. Birthweight may also be related to the amount of a mother's weight gain in pregnancy. Excessive weight gain can translate to increased fetal weight.

By far, maternal diabetes is the most common cause of LGA babies. Diabetes during pregnancy causes the mother's increased blood glucose (sugar) to circulate to the baby. In response, the baby's body makes insulin. All the extra sugar and the extra insulin production can lead to excessive growth and deposits of fat, thus, a larger baby.

HA HA I saw this on the news last night... I can't imagine having a 14 lb baby. All my babies were in the 6 lb range and I had to have a c-section all three times because they were too big to push out. A 14lb baby is like two of my babies ... WOW !!!!

God Bless her !!

And my first child was so petite, it took her 2 years to reach 20 lbs.

She is 17 now

Not sure why. My girlfriend's baby was over 9 lbs and it was her first child - normal diet, did not gain extra weight.

The mother did probably have gestational diabetes and didn't know it. The baby probably isn't very healthy right now...he might be a whopping 14 pounds, but he probably also will need to have some insulin therapy in the beginning to make sure his body functions properly. Kinda sad actually.

I'd be curious to know what the mother was eating, especially during the 3rd trimester.

I couldn't stop eating during my pregnancy. I probably had a pie every single day. Mason was born 7 pounds 6 ounces, totally normal weight. :innocent:

I think undiagnosed diabetis is the main reason of big babies.

Probably so, but what the mother eats or drinks can bring on gestational diabetes, particularly with the amount of sugar in the average American diet.
