I agree with the article that, at least as a general rule, the man should say it first. I also think, though, that the man should propose. Also, I think the article misses the fact that, even though the man should say "I love you" first, men also bear the same risks in saying it first that women do.

With my second relationship, in college, I said it first, but my girlfriend wasn't able to say it back. Eventually she did, but not very long after, the relationship came to a painfull end. I decided in the future not to offer those words till I was confident that the girl shared those feelings, and could respond in kind.

I did say it first with Lai, but it was only after she had been dropping hints that she wanted me to say it; she also believed that I should be the one to say it first. She kept saying "I like you" in ICQ messages, and I began to suspect that she meant more than she was saying. I asked if she wanted me to say something else beginning with "L," and she said "yes" I did, and she said it back Later, she told me that the words for "like" and "love" are the same in Cantonese, context and the way it is said determine which is meant. So she sort of had an advantage there; she could say "I love you" without actually saying it, and instead hint that she was ready for me to say it
