To send or take possessions?

Does anyone have any advice on getting possessions over to the US–what is the cheapest way? All we really have that we want to bring that are very bulky are quite a few books.

Should I talk to a specific company(if so who?) or just take them down to the post office to send? or try and pack them in cases and bring as many as possible each time we travel?

Any help would be great...

We vote for that option having done the shipping thing.

There is a thread in this UK section called "Yes, It's another shipping thread" with lots of companies listed and some estimates and experiences of people.

You are better going with a company rather than the post office. The post office will only accept packages up to 2kg (or 5kg for books) for mailing overseas. Plus they get quite expensive the heavier you get. You can come up with quite a few options by searching for 'sending parcels to the US' on the net.

i think it really depends on the individual. On of the hardest things is to know really how much stuff you would be bringing. Do you have furniture, or lots of other things that would be bulky? The options range from what you can in your luggage, a couple of boxes shipped, up to a whole container. When shipping the boxes, if you don't have that much, maybe air freighting would be worth the extra price, if you have tons, probably going to have to go for sea freighting and it can take 6-12 weeks for your stuff to arrive.
