Hi all... I happen to be visiting Morocco with my SO. Our excuse to come was medical stuff. Of course after a year and a few months away he was wanting to visit family and friends anyway.

There is a nice lady dentist that is supposed to be very good, but I need some teeth pulled and I am phobic of dental procedures. I can handle a cleaning although I hate that too, but pulling is something else.

We have had some trouble finding a dentist that will deal with me. I want sedation, or at the very least, laughing gas. I am too nervous to sit there totally conscious, blood, needles, tooth holes...

Does anyone have any suggestions about who to go to, or how to find out? There is not a lot of moroccan dentist info online. People here don't seem to share the same anxiety about dentistry. Actually, please comment on that too.

We are near Rabat.

If I cause offense it is not on purpose, think about that before you take offense. If you feel offended, consider that maybe I'm not talking about you and maybe I accidentally stumbled onto a sore area and do not know. Thank you.

Hi,

I have to say that you are braver than I am. My husband tried to talk me into getting a tooth filled over there last year because the prices are way cheaper than here. No way!!! It makes me nervous to think of getting any kind of medical or dental care in a foreign country, especially one where English is not widely spoken.

Though I guess screaming can be interpreted in any language. j/k. ;)

Hope you get an answer.

Um....I wouldnt get a tooth pulled there. I saw my fiance go through it and I was with him when he went to at least 4 dentists - just trying to find one that would even pull it, after supposedly it was "fixed" and ended up getting infected. When I describe to him our dental care, while expensive, he would have given anything to have novacaine or some kind of laughing gas which apparently they don't use. After it was pulled, I forced him to go to the pharmacy to get something for it after - pain reliever, disinfectant for the area, anything....he was pretty miserable. And that's how we spent our last two days on my last trip there :(

I'm speaking as someone who doesn't live there though, but seeing his dental problems over the last year, and the problems I've had with dental work here (complications from tooth pulled earlier this year - and that was HERE!) the last place I'd have dental work done is there.

sorry to hear those stories about dentists in morocco. it seems to me like you are talking about some place from the 3rd century... there are good and bad dentists as anywhere in the world, including here in the states.

but if you are looking for good doctors, you can go to the cheikh zayed hospital in rabat it is a very nice hospital, same service as here in the us and with cheaper prices.or you can try dr chaoui in rue okbah agdal rabat, he is my prefered dentist and he speaks some english too, last time i was in morocco, he told me if i brought listerine with me from the us so he wont prescribe a mouth wash for me....LOL

good luck

I know there are great dentists here, but there are also the guys that will yank 'em in the souq. :dead:

I keep getting "oh its so easy, why won't you just let them do it then." If we don't find someone that I deem suitable, it'll just wait til we return to the US. The problem has not been finding a normal modern dentist who gives novacain before they pull, the first lady we tried with was going to do that. It seems you have to go to a hospital to get any level of sedation.

The consensus of everyone my So talks to about this is, "it's so simple, you don't need to be asleep for that!" It makes me feel lonely, being this nervous and having people react like that. I'm sure the dentist lady is a wonderful dentist with lots of training and experience, I'm not trying to give them the idea that I don't think they are as good as what I would find in the US. I have repeated that several times to different people. It's not anything against their country. Ewwwww I just do not want to be aware of what they are doing to me!

I'll mention to my SO what febfiller suggested.

weeeeellll my sister in law is a dentist and seems to be a very good one too. I had her make me up a teeth whitening thing for me. She did all the family's teeth and braces she doesn't like hearing people scream and they're pretty free about the drugs (i was surprised by this really free with them) but she is in Casablanca though

Could you PM a phone number and address? We were considering going to Casa since it is not horribly horribly far. One concern was how easily I could get pain meds for after if I needed it. Anyway, it wouldn't hurt us to call and ask if she can do what I need.

FWIW, my husband has had some teeth pulled here in the U.S., and the dentist only used a nerve block. He may need to be sedated for a more complicated extraction. I'm not saying you shouldn't request the sedation if you want it -- I can understand not wanting to know what's going on because I'd feel the same way. I'm just noting that sedation isn't always the norm here either with extractions, and my husband has felt no pain during his, if that's any reassurance. I hope you find a dentist you're comfortable with.
