Official Birth Certificate & U.S. Passport ?

Hello Everyone,

Our Baby boy is 2 month old, and we're planning to take him to see his grand parents outside the U.S. when he's about 1 year old. Just want to plan things ahead so we're wondering when we can apply a passport for him.

We only have the hospital version of certificate now. And the birth clerk at the hospital told us to wait until the child is 3 month old then go to our county record agency(she gave us the address) to obtain a copy of official birth certificate.

It's our first child so we don't have any experience about this... Anyway, so do we have to wait until we have this official birth certificate to apply for the passport? Or can we use the hospital record? How long does it take for the county or city to issue the certificate? And how long does it take to get a passport once we have the certificate? Can anyone share your knowledge with us? Thanks a lot.

Yep you normally have to have the certified recorded BC.

For minors - one of the primary evidence of citizenship is a Certified Birth Certificate. Hospital record of birth may be acceptable also.

I don't know why you have to wait for 3 months before you can get Original BC. If I were you,call the office where you'll get the BC and ask if you can get one. I got mine over the phone,paid it with credit card and got it in the mail within 5 bussiness days. Then you can apply for the passport of your child. It took 8 weeks for my baby but I think now,it's 4 to 6 weeks
