hi, have any here or their spouse traveled to Vietnam with an expired green card and NOA1 letter? my wife went to buy a ticket today and was told by the travel agency that Vietnam won't let her in with an expired GC and NOA1 letter which extends the GC another year. she was told to get a VN passport instead which cost like $450. she doesn't need the passport since she will be getting her 10yr green card with in the next year (hopefully). Please give me some info on this issue..thanks guys.

your wife does not need a green card to go to Vietnam, She needs a Green card to renter America.

also you need a Passport to travel to and from Vietnam.

A 10 year green card is not a passport to travel. It lets you stay in America and lets you work. Your wife does need a passport.

Hi Robert,

thanks for the response. FYI, she does not need to have a passport to enter vietnam. a valid green card and a visa from vietnam would be enough to enter (my wife have been back using her GC and visa). The problem I have is that the date on the GC has expired but technically it is still valid for another year with the NOA1 letter. I was just concerned that vietnam customs would not recognize that letter. thanks

Ls Tuan on Saigon Houston radio 900AM has his weekly radio show at 0300PM Central time and callers with questions can call in at 713-664-8002

I recall him repeating on his radio show numerous times the required documents to travel to VN:

For people with VNese passports, you need VN passports, your Green cards (both must still have 6 months left). No VN Visa needed. If traveling more than 1 year, you'll need Reentry permit to get back in the US.

For people with US passports, you need US passports, VN Visa.

In any case, you DO need a valid passport with at least 6 months on it.

She needs Passport.

Also NOA1 doesn't do anything.

She needs to visit USCIS local office, and ask for I-551 stamp, which will be valid for 1 year.

Vietnam Government doesn't have access to USCIS system.

Also, depending oh her nationality and passport, it may require VISA, or it may be o.k. without VISA because of Visa Waiver Program by Vietnam Government.

Tung,

What happens to her VN passport? Lost? can't be expired, since she's just got here in a few years.

When she leaves the US to return to VN, the travel agent or airline company will def. require her to present: A Valid passport. In her case, It will be a VN valid passport which still has 6 months left til expiration date.

If she plans to RETURN to the US after her trip to VN (assumed she will), Travel Agent and the Airline will require her Valid Green Card, or a combination of an Expired GC accompanied with NOA1 from her Removal Condition application.

On the Vietnam side: I hope she didn't shred her VN passport. She can enter VN with a VN passport at anytime. If she intends to return to the US, then she will need to show her valid GC. I don't believe she can show up with an expired GC and NOA1 letter. But it's debatable. IF she just wants to return to VN and not coming back to the US, what matters if she doesn't have a GC. Given that she is still legally a VN citizen, GC or not won't stop her from entering VN.

Your GC and NOA1 only valid and matter if she wants to return to the US. Anyone disagree?

I am so glad i found this post. Here is my situation, please clarify:

My wife entered the US with K-1, she got her two-year permanent resident card (green card) back in November 2007. Her green card will expire this November 2009 and her Vietnam passport will expire some time in 2011. We plan on going back to Vietnam this March. What other documents will she need to have (or apply for) besides what she already have and of course a plane ticket?

Thanks...

I don't know, I'm thinking she's good to go. She of course won't need a visa to enter Vietnam. I think that's it, unless you want to bring like 40 iPhones with you.

She's got a Green Card, so she doesn't need AP (as in Advance of getting her Green Card). Now all you need to do is purchase about 40 iPhones, right?

I'm so sorry, I just crack myself up. Maybe your family is not as obsessed with getting an iPhone as mine is. Honestly, I think if you brought 40 iPhones with you, it would pay for the trip to Vietnam.
