This has tons of great information, and does confirm that:

If You Are a Conditional Resident

You may be in the U.S. as a conditional resident (CR).

You are a CR if you were married for less than 2 years

to your U.S. citizen or permanent resident spouse on

the day your permanent resident status was granted. If

you have children, they also may be CRs. Some immigrant

investors are also conditional residents.

A CR has the same rights and responsibilities as a permanent

resident. Conditional residents must file either Form

I-751, Petition to Remove the Conditions on Residence,

or Form I-829, Petition by Entrepreneur to Remove

Conditions, within 2 years of the date they were granted

conditional permanent resident status. This date is usually

the expiration date of your Permanent Resident Card.You

should file these forms within 90 days of the 2-year

anniversary of when you got your conditional resident

status. If you do not do this, you can lose your immigration

status.

It does make interesting reading, and you can save it in case you want to look back on it later.

Banking and finances is one area I spend tons of time on when I am conducting an ESL class. You cannot imagine the thanks I get for explaining the financial traps and pitfalls.

Drivers licensing is another.

I encourage you to do so, Michelle. It occured to me after reading your note that it might be helpful for situations like yours, where the newcomer is struggling with the adjustment. Having stuff like banking etc explained by someone other than one's significant other might help with that 'helpless' feeling that can come from moving to a new country (from my experience).

I think most people find out they have to register with the selective service when they get their driver's licenses. At least, that's the way it is here in Iowa. They don't force you to do it right then and there, but they do make it very clear that you have to do it at some point. Other than that, I think they send a letter. I was kinda p!ssed when I found out J had to register with the SS. I just don't like it. For personal reasons I don't care to discuss.
