Ollie's interview is on the 14th and he flies to SFO on the 18th (wow)

He's sold everything he owns, except for a few boxes of keepsakes and such, 10-25 kg.

For a 25 kg box, UPS is quoting 145 GBP and fedex quotes 96 GBP

Has anyone found anything cheeper?

I'd also suggest the excess baggage route with whichever airline you'll be flying with.

I bought 3 extra cases on American Airlines when I flew out in March of 2005. I think it cost about 140GBP which may or may not be cheaper than some other freight shipping options. However, the overwhelming advantage of using this method is that all of your belongings arrive when you do. UPS or another shipping company might work out fractionally cheaper but your stuff will take at least a week to arrive, if not longer.

Call the airline and ask to speak to their baggage handlers and the airport you'll be flying from. They'll have the most accurate info on fees and limitations.

As long as each additonal bag doesn't weigh more than the max weight for checked luggage I beleive that the only real restriction is how many bags you can manage to move through customs on your own. I managed 2 carts at Chicago O'hare without too many problems.

Mark :)

He's shipping his danged robotic dog and he doesn't trust the baggage handlers. :| Extra baggage was my first thought too.

He's leaving or sold virtually everything he had so I'm not about to push the issue, its vital that he brings what's important to him and if he wants it to go via post w/insurance, then that's the way we'll do it.

Can he not take the robot dog ( ) as hand luggage? And put other stuff in extra baggage?

I'm def going to be using excess baggage on the airline (US Airways, they told me I could have as many excess bags as I wanted, as long as I paid for them - approx $80 per bag and each bag must be under 23kg) so I can take all my clothes (except maybe winter coats) and also ship other stuff probably thru excessbaggage.com - and that will be mostly books.

I took everything as excess baggage except my bike which I shipped UPS. Maybe he could use someone like UPS for his robotic dog but ship everything else on the plane. At least that way he only has to wait for fido... thats gotta be better than no clothes for a week or two !!
